Give Up Dream 1M for Z4 sDrive35is?

So I've been looking to pull the trigger on a AW/BSM 1M purchase between now and this August. However, my search the past few months have been somewhat unsuccessful.

Aesthetically, the new E89 Z4's aren't too shabby. And the sDrive35is has the same engine as the 1M with lower torque and worse handling.

The only problem with trying to attain a 1M at this point of time is that there are none available via the dealer, and if I were to buy one from the classifieds section and/or AutoTrader, I'm looking at paying I'm upwards of $60-65k for a $55k MSRP car.

What do you guys think?

If you really want an 1M, get it. otherwise next time you see one you will be sorry you did not, imho.

what's the hold up? 5K extra? you will lose that much in Z4 as soon as you drive off the dealership lot vs 1M retaining value better, just my 2 cents.

Just finding an AW/BSM 1M with the options I want (Fully Loaded) at a reasonable price.

They are two different cars.
I have a good friend that owns the '35is (following my suggestion). I've driven it and it's a nice product.
It's not a 1M. Not really close, actually, except for the BMW "feel."

The 1M is a track-oriented car for daily street use.
The Z is a roadster.

If you want the 1M experience then do the best you can to get one. The post about the $$$ issue is right on.

The Z4 cannot be a substitute for a 1M. It's different.
Figure out which suits you and then go after it.

Two different cars completely. What are you looking for in a car? Do you need a backseat (however small it may be, it is still there)? Do you want a convertible? Will you be tracking the car?

I think if your plan is for a nice cruiser that its fast, and looks good then the z4 is a great product. The 1m is much more track focused and has a feel to it that is hard to replicate without driving an M3. I have no desire at all to be driving a hard top convertible or any convertible for that matter. None, so it was never even in the running for me.

As far as the price is concerned an optioned z4 is 60k. If you are patient enough and keep bothering people on this board someone will sell you a 1m for 60k with all the options. They will be walking away with a small profit having enjoyed the car for the extent of their ownership. People are fickle and though we have seen the market slow in the last few months, I think there are still some people out there who will come to realize that the 1m is not for them.

I love the 1m and everything about it. No way I would substitute a dct z4 for it...wow

Wow, thanks for all the reassurance guys!

I've had my heart set on the 1M since its announcement in 2009 and have become gradually desperate to get something else in its place. I even had a deposit down at 2 different dealerships in Massachusetts for an allocation which I had never got. And with the 1M market becoming as slow as it has been lately, I was just about to give it all up..

I have until end of August to get this car, so let's hope I find the right match.

Every time I get any doubts of my decision to wait, I just hit play on this video:

I'll be on the look outout! Thanks again guys

you're not the only one in the market for a 1M so you'd better not be too picky when an opportunity pops up . why not contact 1SerieStud for his VO ( i know it's not AW/BSM ) ?

Just for the record, the Z has the same level of torque, 500 nm with the overboost, 450 without, no difference there.

It is a more quality product, inside outside and more expensive either (new prices with the same or similar level of equipment). It is equally fast if not faster than a 1M in a straight line, the problem is the Z better stays on that line and 1M not.

One is a strict 2 seater, DCT transmission, adaptive suspension, basic brakes and electric steering, but also stylish, quality and fast roadster/coupe, other is a practical but also ready for track, does it all, 4 seat manual gearbox compact coupe with almost nothing to select.

I see nothing common/similar other than the terrific engine and BMW brand, try to drive a 1M if you can, I assume you already tested a Z, after that you will know which one is better for you.

Love, love, love my Z4 35i but then again I don't want a back seat and I do want the ability to put the top down. A new z435is is likely more expensive than a used 1M???

I'd rather just get the Z4 3.5i in manual and tune with the money saved from Z4 3.5is

I have both a 1M and z4 sDrive 35is and I like both cars. If you have your mind set on a 1M, get the 1M the cars aren't even close to the same.

I agree with what other have said about the color choice. It's hard enough getting a used 1M. By insisting on AW/BSM you are eliminating well over 50% of the total number of US cars.

Good luck.

And the Z4 has no multi-purpose backseats, the 1M has.

Be patient and get the 1M... because you know damn well when you buy the Z4, a few months from now you will see the 1M you want for sale and will take a massive hit on the Z4 to get it. Just saying... Ive been there several times...
