BMW CF roof production video (2010) - Why was the 1M denied these ?
To eat our hearts out: a look behind the scenes with a 10 minute video of the production process of BMW CFRP roofs (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) at the BMW plant Landschut (2010). Only 3.9 kg in the shown example.
Does anyone know why BMW M didn't equip the 1M with these beauties ? The "bird [beast] in a gilded cage" syndrome: the Benjamin M was not allowed to enter too far into M3 territory ? Or simply a time, cost or development issue (structural integrity) ? (from 09:26 onwards [final CF roof inspection]: you'll notice that it's a CF roof for the M3: check the "M3" indication on the support of the CF roof - wish there would have been a "1M" support in that room too). BMW in the US (2011) (2 parts):

BMW will obviously have a budget for the 1M. If the 1M had composite front wings, carbon kevlar front rear bumper bars, carbon roof and aluminium bonnet like the E92 M3, it would bring the 1M's price so close to the M3 that the 1M and M3 would cannibalise each other i.e. Potential M3 customers would decide to save money and get the 1M, and customers who are only interested in badge status would forego the 1M and pay a little more to get the M3. Just the carbon roof itself for a low production volume vehicle would add at least a couple Ks to the base price. In the real world, the average customer is very sensitive to pricingand BMW have to consider competition from Audi and Porsche.

Price and quite likely, a Federal/DOT (Dept of Transportation) crash testing certification. It would have required crashing about 20 or so cars, divide that by 740, and it is a healthy percentage, not in the right direction.
I suspect that has a lot to do with the BMW Perf Seats not being offered here as well.

Way to beat me to the post by a couple weeks artemis! haha
Besides crash testing I am sure the costs of retooling the facility for the smaller 1M molds, making the molds, etc. would be ridiculously cost prohibitive for a 1 year production car. |
