BMW Performance Steering Wheel Swap

Anyone swapped there wheel to BMW performance wheel with blue stripe. Just curious how hard it is to swap and if they prefer that wheel to stock. Im looking at taking up a vendor on a deal they have on the wheel but wanted to get some insight prior.

I swapped mine on my 135i (see below). Can't comment on the comparison to the stock 1M wheel, but I can comment on the swap.

Installation is very simple:
1. Remove airbag (two hidden push-tabs inside the steering wheel); then disconnect two cables
2. Unplug multi-function wires
3. Remove steering wheel (One central hex-nut)
4. Swap trim and buttons (needs T15 torx driver if I remember correctly; 3 screws for the trim 2 or so for the buttons
5. Put in new wheel (1 nut); replace wires and click airbag back in place.

I was very excited when I got mine so I did it before work and it took me exactly 15 minutes all told - it's really easy.

Just saw you're in San Diego!
Come out on Saturday to Qualcomm stadium (autocross) and you can check out my steering wheel. I can also help you with the install if you have any questions or just want a 2nd set of hands.

Can you pull a fuse instead of disconnecting the battery?

Ok, this is bad mojo and definitely in the "Kids, don't try this at home" category, but I didn't pull any fuses OR disconnect the battery. This only occurred to me after I started whistling to a tune on the radio while I was doing the work

Again, don't be me, pull the battery. I didn't though and I'm still alive to tell the storry

No, disconnecting the battery won't help. The airbag module has it in its memory that there was a voltage interruption and now you'll need to have that reset.

I've had my v2 electronic I installed for over a year now with no issues other than it turning off the display on hot days out in the sun. I just disconnected the battery to disable the air bag and then had to reset date/time info when I reconnected the battery to reset the car, nothing else was required for me.

This is interesting issue. I also did not have any issues with my performance wheel install, it is almost a year now. And this is despite the fact that we did not disconnect the battery at the time, it seems to be I got lucky in that one

Just to clarify, if you disconnect the airbag connector while the car is turned off (no key in ignition), do the swap and reconnect all the plugs you should be fine. It's only when you have your airbag disconnected and you turn the key on to accessories or start the car the airbag light will illuminate. Then you'll need it reset
