Alpine audio upgrade
Sorry, I know this has been covered a million times but im wondering if I could get some feedback from anyone who has had the Apline audio upgrade done?
I have the bog standard system i.e - no amp or tweeters. Id love a bit more punch. How much does it cost and does anyone except main dealers supply / fit it? |

For the money the spec didn't seem a decent upgrade. I was surprised when I saw the spec of the upgrade and wondered how the standard set up could be worse. It is an improvement over standard but I can't see how any decent audio store couldn't offer you a superior set up for the money. It's what put me off and the main advantage seems to be the 'special' coding required to fit it. Again, I can't see how any decent audio store couldn't get a set up working.

I had Jenhart fitted into my120d at Christmas and it really improved the sound but the fitter wasn't the best ... That and the spaghett under the boot floor put me off doing the same to my 330D. The Jenhart upgrade with amp ended up costing me 1k... The Alpine will be just over £700 but with no arguements over warranty & retro -fit screwing things up.
If the car was out of warranty I would happily rip it to pieces myself! Atb |

Yes... I know... I have got cars & run them for a year for less...
But whilst it's a lot of money.... the warranty on a 44k car is priceless... well actually it's 44k but you get my point. I had to sell a kidney to buy the car, I am off to the ozzie now to sell one of my wife's to pay for the Alpine upgrade... |

You got to do what makes you most comfortable buddy but, I'd be very surprised if you'd have any warranty issues unless it could be shown whatever it is you've altered / added has contributed to the failure of whatever it is has failed. Which is only fair in any case. Even re-mapping doesn't void the whole warranty, just certain components, again only fair.
You can still fit the Alpine upgrade yourself, how much of that is labour?

The labour charge for fitting is less than £300, so expensive but I can live with that. A day out of my life getting it done & the high blood pressure if I buggered it up would be painful.
I understand the warranty issues but to be honest I am getting to the stage where I just don't want the hassle if an issue arrises. Having said all of that I do like the look of the under seat subs B33M3R fitted ;-) Maybe when my wallet has recovered it might be a job to do. |

This is my first BMW and I think it's a disgrace that they’ve fitted such a poor quality system in a car of this price & perceived quality. It is, by far, the poorest sound quality I’ve had to suffer in a car for over 20 yrs, although I do admit to being an Alpine fan and upgraded most of my previous systems. Needless to say, when I got the BMW last year, the in car sound quality was a shock to the system and I was all for ripping it out and replacing with Alpine. Having lived with it for a few months however, I’ve got used to it and the thought of spending over £1k on half decent upgrade and coding does not fill me with enthusiasm, so I doubt I’ll be bothering!

I would say it's worth it, I luckily got one for £260 all in including new tweeter housings about 4 years ago and fitted myself. Sometimes I think it needs more bass, but that's me. Mine came with the alpine badges

IanS100.... the 120Msport I had for a bit lasted 1 day before I got it upgraded... the baby bmw is shocking and it makes E90 sound like a concert hall in comparison !
It is a disgrace that a premium car brand puts out such awful ICE when they pride themselves on the driver experience & having the most "techie" car they can build. "Want to send a POI from google to your car sir?, remote access from your Iphone?, unlock you car from your Iphone?, 40 mpg from a 3l diesel that will do 0-60 in 6.3 seconds... not a problem with any of that sir! Oh and by the way your £25-£55k car stereo will sound like a hotel bathroom speaker with the definition of a squashed rodent after 3 weeks on a bit of tarmac.... "an upgrade is available sir to go along with your 2k Idrive pro.... a mere £1000 pounds ..."..... Shocking! |

Putting warranty worries aside, has anyone had a system fitted by an independant ICE company? Im sure it would be cheaper and probably sound better if done right?

I replaced the front speakea in my base audio set up with some pioneer ones. Cost about £60 for the speakers so it by no means amazing, but still sounds much better than the base audio. If you really want quality though I think there is no way round it but to spend alot more, but am saving up for the Birds Supension kit, after that might have a serious look at upgrading the sound.
Do BMW dealers still offer to fit the Alpine kit if you have the £££? |

BMW are fitting my Alpine upgrade for about £300 which is about the same amount that I paid the ICE fella last year to do the Jenhert in my 120D... and he didn't do a good job at all. I rang around the local car audio boys & they all quoted £250-£800 for installation. It's a good days work to remove the seats, run cables in, door cards etc, where as the Alpine is almost plug n play from what I have read.
What are these Logic 7 subs Zaheer... BMW logic 7 or something else? |
