1M attempted theft

last month some professionals tried to steal our cars from my home:

home surveillance recognized persons on our property...

i watched some guy holding some kind of slim prybar approaching my girlfriends e92 which is parked behind my 1M

called the police

...waited for the police

guy pulled out the lock of the e92 within 10seconds without triggering the alarm...

i stepped out of the house with a loaded handgun...

guy ran away fast as hell

- police arrived after some time

driver side door of the e92 was ruined in the process...

at least silent alarm from the home system worked - opposed to the bmw stock alarm system...

comparing the two alarm systems is like comparing apples and oranges. that's not even fair.

I am sure you can get an aftermarket, exterior motion sensing alarm for the car as well.

bottom line though, is that a professional can defeat the car alarm, and professional can ALSO defeat your HOME alarm, probably just as easily.

I put some high end fabric duct tape over my OBDII port. This is crazy how easy it is to steal these cars. Glad you and your car(s) are Ok.

A thief can find and cut your telecom lines and defeat your off-site monitoring, but it would be hard for them to defeat well placed motion sensors that activate well hidden cameras unless they knew the system was there.

Glad you caught him in the act, too bad you couldn't stop him running away.

Don't most good systems have a cell/wireless backup?

Also, glad everything worked out Evolution.

I'll be in Austria next month and will steer clear of your place after hours!

I always thought of Austria as a safe, low-threat area. Makes me worry about our drive there next month.

We've got some smart people on this forum, surely one of us can devise a way to prevent OBD-jacking...is there a lock for an OBD port? I'd been thinking about putting a dummy plug into the port and using some kind of mount system...any ideas?

Back when cars weren't so technical and computerized, I put a kill switch inline with my fuel pump fuse....I put the little switch mounted to my shifter and under my shift boot...never had an issue when vehicle broken into twice in San Antonio.

Where do you think we could put a kill switch in our 1's?

Meaning you'd be willing to kill someone over a car? I don't want someone stealing my car, but I wouldn't be willing to kill someone over it. Just saying'.

When seconds count.... cops are only minutes away...

Next time dont make the firearm visible but withing reach and make the guy come up to you so you can properly end his/her criminal career. But that is jsut what I would do. Your actions are your own. They will just move on to the next house...

The only warning shot should be center mass and it'll serve as a warning to anyone else that wants to try and steal others property.

In all seriousness... nobody should ever fire a warning shot. The purpose of a firearm is for protection and should never be used or brandished unless you are prepared to use it and stop the threat. Most states and countries dont even allow "warning" shots. Case in point... Here in Florida a wife fired a warning shot in the house to warn off her abusive husband who was about to attack her in their home a few weeks ago. He threatened her life and was coming after her. She was arrested for discharging the weapon and was just sentenced to 20 years in federal prison because of it while the abisive A-hole gets to live, and repeat the abusive attitude towards more woman. She gets the "minimum" sentence of 20 years and would have walked away free of any charges if she just put 2 in his chest and claimed self defense under the "stand your ground" law. She now has 20 years to think about never firing warning shots ever again...

On a side note to this thread... I would try and re-locate the OBD-II port and leave the OEM one there as a dummy. Im sure it could be done.

oh...if it had only played out like the final scene in horrible bosses...

"i have remotely disabled your engine. it is standard nav-guide protocol whenever a driver has committed a crime."
...
"excuse me, officers. i should mention that it is nav-guide policy to record all conversations for quality assurance."

nice product placement VW.

You have an eye for details Sir! A simple explanation is maybe he was not a rocket scientist aiming to finance his Masters degree in MIT

Or the E92 was closer to the gate.

The E92 was behind the 1M on the driveway, so was sitting in the way.

The 1M has the M button, but not KITT's Turbo Boost button to jump over the E92 (um, backwards).

Oooh! When is the drive? I'm going to be there 6/23 - 7/8. Will probably be in Austria (so I will be doing the Grossglockner) for a week and then driving to Torino to see my little nephew in-law!

I'm not sure trespassing laws are the same in Austria.
