1100 miles is the break-in point I believe, though most concede that this doesn't need to be strictly adhered to. This isn't an M engine that has a strict regiment. |

Road trips make breaking in easy. I broke mine in with a drive to Atlanta and back. It was nice not to have to wait a month before I could drive "enthusiastically"

I beat straight out of the parking lot and at 25k+ miles, it's a champ.
My sales rep told me it was already broken in at the factory. |

Not really true. While many have different viewpoints on the break-in period, it´s quite self evident that the brakes are not broken in at all. Regarding the motor, there are too many schools of thought on this but I´ve never had a problem following BMW´s break-in instructions since it allows you to go faster than 170 KM/H as long as you vary your revs.

To the OP: Immediately upon picking up my first E9x 3er, I drove ca. 2500 km in a period of five days.
No reason to wait - the car is good to go when it´s delivered to you.

My level and quantity of beatings weren't so prevalent during the first 500 miles, it's just I don't worry about it as much as the posters that ask the question. It makes sense the brakes wouldn't be broken in before delivery, but I'm more interested in not slowing down.

My dealer and the technicians told me to drive my car hard at any time. They said "You just spent 45k on a 335i. It's a BMW and it is meant to be driven hard."
Besides, mine is a 3 year lease and the warranty will fix anything that comes up until I trade it in. Show it who's boss!

Although be aware that you'll probably have a few rock chips by the time your road trip is done.

I'm going on a long trip for the sole purpose of breaking my car in.

Just about everyone who does PCD takes their car on a long road trip right away. As long as you don't rev above 4500 RPM and as already mentioned, try to vary your speeds during the trip - it's probably the best way to break the car in. It lets it run at full operating temp for a long time.

The first week of getting our e90, we did 2000 km round-trip. It is perfectly fine way to break in your new car. Vary your speed and whack it only when it has warm up. Don't worry about not going above 4500rpm. Staying below 160km/h is I think doable.

I got my E92 335i last week and immediately took a trip through Europe, about 2500km. I tried to keep the revs below 4000 but sometimes it was impossible, especially in Germany I was told no break-in needed, the car is ready to run after delivery.
The car feels great but not as powerful as I expected though.. |

BMW has a recommended break-in period that should be followed if you want the manufacturer's intended mix of performance, efficiency, and reliability. Do your best to vary RPMs, try to stay under 4500, and go easy on the brakes and tires. However, don't stress about minor things. Your car won't explode if the tach goes over 4500 once or twice, or if you have to make a panic stop before the end of the break-in period.

All you need to do to get the brakes ready, don't know if they do this at the factory, probably not, to be safe is perform a proper "Bedding in" procedure. Otherwise, this makes no sense whatsoever. |

I took mine on a 6200 mile trip back to LA from PCD (2 miles on the odometer to start). I broke it in on the Blue Ridge Parkway at a sedate 45 mph (most of the time).

A few minutes of driving around to allow the engine to warm up.

Picked mine up and took it to vegas the following weekend, 800 miles behind the wheel of your new car will definitely help you get to know it much better!
Take it out for a long drive and dont come back!
