Cop on my tail, dropped it into 4th.. No More Cop!

I downshifted into 4th to slow down... What were you thinking? One thing I have noticed about the 335i is that you have to pay careful attention to how fast you are going. I find myself going over 75 mph and think I am doing 50 pretty often.

I was doing 70 mph when I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a police car gaining on me in my lane. So I downshifted into 4th and didn't hit the brakes so that I didn't give it away that I was slowing down. Looks like I did it in the nick of time before he could pace me at the faster speed. Once he paced me going the speed limit he changed lanes and went right around me.

The best thing about the 335i is that most cops don't know what kind of beastly engine lies beneath the hood. My 335i blends into the rest of the 3-series sedans out there and doesn't attract negative attention from the cops the way my old corvette or 350Z did. Got to love the 335i for this reason.

Anyone else seem to speed very easily in this car. Have any "oh crap" moments when you realize you are flying and 20+ mph over the speed limit?

Dan

I wouldn't say 'most cops don't know how fast the 335i is.' In my experience, I think many police officers, especially Highway Patrol Officers are real car enthusiasts...many of them have modded cars they race on their days off, and I bet a lot of them know all about the 335i.

Anyway, mental note for you next time...don't downshift to 4th; just simply let off the gas and switch lanes to let him fly by you.

btw -- your speedo is probably ~ 3-4 mph off (shows faster than you're really going) just like the rest of us so don't sweat it too much if you look down and see you're going 75mph, unless your in a 55mph zone.

It's very easy to speed, especially if you love hearing that sweet engine rev! ticket count: 1 - 25mph over

+1
Because few rev-match and without doing it you can mess up your transmission.

I don't drive 80 and only think I'm doing 60. I know how fast I'm going, even when I'm going fast. I don't mind people speeding, but if you don't know you're speeding, then you should evaluate your driving habits. Be safe, don't make any sudden moves, look down the road, and be mindful of your mirrors. It's not a problem to drive fast if you do it safely.

FWIW, LEOs don't give a rats ass if you hit the brakes, they see it all day long. In fact letting the LEOs see brake lights can sometimes be a good thing, shows you are paying attention.

I've heard this too. A lot of them like to see brake lights because it shows that you are aware of them.

Downshifting? Naw, much easier to yank the parking brake.

This is especially true if they are off in the distance, or you just blew by while they were parked. Hitting the brakes even just to show em' your lights lets them know that while you may be speeding a bit, you have your eyes open and are alert and on task.

Many times this is enough to have them just go on by or ignore you altogether.

Oh yeah. I was on a highway with very few cars. I went to pass one and noticed soon after I was doing 120 mph.

Im sure it's like that with a bunch of cars- you feel slower than the actually speed the car is travelling at. It's not just the 335 but also 325, 330, etc.

I do that only when I'm late. I love downshifting because you dont have to step on the breaks. Keeps cops away from me.

The cop doesn't care. They know it's a BMW and know that you can afford to pay the ticket.

Be Careful.
