335xi Coupe?

Is there really going to be a 335xi Coupe in 08? If so that would kinda piss me off. I wanted an xi but i wanted a coupe and i didnt want a 328, dealer told me they already had the sedan version 335xi but no plans for a coupe version so we pressed with our deal, if the xi coupe comes out, its safe to say I've been had. ugh.

I'm fairly certain that the 335xi coupe will be released soon.

Yes, the E92 335xi will be available at the end of this year. Was not available for me back then, so it was never an option for me.

I know this has been debated just like the lease vs. buy, coral red yea or nay, do you like my CSL's, step vs. manual, on and on. But AWD does not come for free, there are disadvantages to the xi setup. We've even seen posters in Sweden stating they drove a RWD e9x with sticky snows and had no problems. imho it's irrational to say if BMW comes out with an xi version of the 335 coupe, you'd be pissed. The sedan has already shipped, there is an xi 328 coupe, of course there should be a 335 as well. There once was a day when you bought what you needed. Already the 335 is a little bit less 50/50 than the 330, the 335xi coupe will be even yet a little more off than the RWD version.

i guess i should clarify, i am only pissed that it seems like my salesperson was just making a sale and not really caring what he said, im not pissed that my car is not awd vs. rwd. things worked out perfectly in my purchase of my 335i coupe and i could not be more satisfied. i wouldn't change it for anything. and just to cap this all off:

Dear Mr. XXX:

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding the 2008 BMW 335xi Coupe. We appreciate your inquiry.

The 335xi Coupe will go into production starting the 4th quarter of 2007. I hope this information is helpful.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this e-mail or contact the Customer Relations and Services Department at 1-800-831-1117, Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Eastern Standard Time. Again, thank you for contacting BMW.

Same as they do for the e92 328xi that is already out. The e92 335xi will have the same xi suspension as the 328xi.

335xi Coupe or 335i Coupe

With all this talk about an xi coupe, I couldn't help myself and I recently had my 2008 order switched from the "i" to "xi" coupe. I wonder if I've made a mistake in my choice. Nothing is in stone at this point so I suppose I could simply change the order and push things out a month or so.

I live in Montreal which is pretty flat and a friggin traffic nightmare so no harm with the "i". But we get ample amounts of snow, which is what prompted me to recently switch my order to an "xi". North of here we have even more snow and the Adirondacks and Green Mountains to the South in NY and VT. The whole family skiis (downhill and cross), so it made sense to switch to the "xi".

The dilema is that I do love riding hard and look for the added feel that the "i" would have provided.

I'd love to hear some view points from fellow drivers on whether to "i" or "xi".

Thanks

for that debate, search for it, lots of informative discussion on i vs xi
we live in Canada and not the North Pole, as long as you have a set of decent winter tires, you'll be fine

I currently have an AWD STi and will be taking delivery of a RWD 335i next week (and live in upstate NY). I am of the opinion that 1) AWD is severely overrated (proper tires are more important than drivetrain layout) and 2) AWD, which adds weight, increases drivetrain loss, and makes the weight distribution more uneven takes away from some of the fun of driving a RWD BMW.

HOWEVER, in your case, if you really are planning on driving this around the Laurentians or the Adirondacks, going at lower speeds up and down hills/mountains is one of the few places that there will be a noticeable difference between the AWD and RWD and it may be advantageous for you to get the xi. If you just plan on tooling around Montreal, you'll be fine with the RWD and snow tires (note that if you are getting the sport package, snow tires will be a must, even with AWD - even if you aren't getting the SP, I'd get snow tires anyway).

Can XDrive be dialed down or turned off?

Snow tires all around without question. Most of the winter is spent going to and getting from ski hills, so I'm thinking that the 'xi' is the way to go.

I'm curious to know if XDrive can be dialed down (or off???) like the STi.

My 335xi Coupe is on order

Just waiting for the BMW Canada computers to have the ordering system online to finalize the color and options.

The dealers knew about this as early as December 2006.

I chose the XI for the 4-5 times a year that it snows hard in Toronto. The XDrive is not like Quattro or the Subie system. It does shut off at high speeds.

XDrive has really improved over the past couple of years with the help of more powerful electronics.

The advantages of full mechanical systems like Quattro are largely negated now. Plus you get the fuel economy advantages of a part time system like XDrive.

In the end, it is just some measure of security for a daily driver for me and I will still get good snows. I drove my E36 M3 around in the snow with good snow tires and some days, I wished I didn't leave home.

I'm trying read up as much as I can on the Xdrive, but I don't seem to find much on comparisons between the two. Like yourself T Bone, I'm waiting to pick the colour and options. Pinging the dealer ever 2 weeks. He must be sick of me by now.

Cheers.

Here is the best article that I have found on this topic..... The computer is taking over the world! The early Xdrives had horrible response times but now Xdrive is as quick as the DSC nanny system.

You still cannot break the laws of Sir Isaac Newton but this system will save many butts.

You will of course like the hill descent feature.....

I live in san diego where there is no snow, and little rain... I'm planning on buying a new 08, but stuck between the 335i coupe and the xi coupe. the 2k price difference isn't that big of a deal, but if theres NO other pluses other then better performance in poor road conditions then whats the point?

Talk to any of the professional drivers at BMW. If they're not compensated in any way by the marketing department (like when I did the Ultimate Driving Experience during the E90 launch), they'll tell you to stay away from x drive, and to get a CR-V to drive if you live in places with bad weather. But they are purists of course. Maybe for 75% of the people out there x drive is a worthwhile compromise as is steptronic.

I'm sure if marketing got their hands on the project, they could sell an AWD M3 as well. People would buy it, but the M3 would be compromised.

Well put. I'm sure there were plenty of folks that rolled their eyes when they heard the 911 4/S was being introduced too, LOL.
