Buy a Mini Cooper S. I drove two in the past 5 years. They're the best BMW products out there in the $20k range.

New? Used? Coupe? Sedan? Convertible? SUV? Price Range?

1s and 3 Series are great cars as I'm sure most will agree here.
Mini's are amazing as well from what I've heard. Many mini fans here as well.
I don't know about others, but for older BMs I personally Love the e46 M3 and M coupe.
I don't think you can really go wrong with any present or recently past Ms that I can think of.

Hit us with some more info

I vote a used e36 ('95-'99)/e46 ('01-'06) M3 if you are handy and can do some of the maintenance yourself. The M cars are the pinnacle of BMW and though I drive the newer 1 series M I still lust after the older M models. I will likely be picking one up as a second car in the next year or so. That said the M models also can be some of the testiest. Research is key before you buy. You want to buy one with a solid history of maintenance. Doesn't have to be perfect, but it will make a huge difference in the long run. From what I have experienced/read maintenance history trumps low mileage on the older M cars. Meaning an e46 M3 with 20k miles may cost you more in the long run than an example with 100k that has been meticulously maintained by previous owners.

I will reiterate that being handy with tools is a must if you want a BMW and don't want to spend a whole lot. Having repairs done at a shop will cost you a ton of money. Luckily there are great online communities like this that can help you diagnose any issues, have ample diy instructions, and provide resources for the "budget" minded in all of us.

If you are not looking to spend a lot of money for a BMW, then a new one is out of the question. I would suggest a certified used 328i as they are built to last forever. Avoiding one with a navigation system will save you both money and headaches.
