So when I went to leave work on Friday, I walk up to my car and I see this huge streak of oil running out from under the car well past the drivers door. In a half hour or so that it took to call for tow truck and make arrangements, the oil had leaked at least another foot.

All the leaking had taken place in the span of about four hours. I can't post pictures as I'm on mobile, but it was a very huge leak that once the car was moved in total was probably about 6 feet long.

Any ideas on what might have happened? In case you can't see my signature, I have an 07 335.

The only good side to all this is I got an F30 loaner car, and it's been fun learning some of the new technology, and experiencing the N 20 engine. It's a brown modern line.

Is that engine oil or powersteering fluid?

I really don't know, I assumed it was engine oil but... Hopefully the dealer will get a look at it today and let me know what exactly the problem is.

Did you get an oil change recently, maybe the bolt wasn't tightened enough? You get a look-see underneath before it was towed.

holy cow, good thing you called a tow truck instead of trying to drive it to the dealer, good call.

Did you hit something on the way to work? Busted oil pan?

Update: Oil pan seal is leaking. Replacement is ~$1600. I so can't wait to get rid of this car even though I love it so much. I am now at about $4600 in repairs the past 7 months. It's just not worth it anymore. Trying to find a CPO 335 sedan and there are none in my area right now, but lots of coupes though.

why does it cost $1600 to replace oil pan gasket? I've dropped oil pans on toyota camrys and civics, and they didn't take no more than an hour to drop, clean, and replace. $1600 is a robbery.

Most BMWs require you drop and/or remove the front subframe. The bill is all labor - well plus the 300% markup on the gasket and new set of aluminum pan bolts that you are supposed to replace. It's a $60 DIY project otherwise.

Fraggy, did you have the option of getting extended warranty before the warranty expired?

Is that the dealer quote ? If you're in SD, Try Euroautospot in Miramar. They're an Indy BMW repair and it will probably cost less.

I did but chose not to lol. Won't do that again. I just bought an '09 CPO so I'm good for 100k.

The car was towed to the dealer. Re-towing to EAS and having to rent a car was just not worth it. I had an F30 modern line 5 days. Taught me a lot about that car.

Out of curiosity, how old was your oil? Just looking at the color..

I have a 2011 328i. Had small leak and thus took it to dealer. First they thought it was gasket and had to order (not in stock locally). When they dropped the pan to do gasket they found pan was defective and had to order that and there was only 1 in the US which I found strange.
When they told me it was a long job they talked about the front suspension issue. Fortunately, mine was under warranty.
I really am convinced that I don't want to drive one of these cars with no warranty or maintenance plan. If it is $1,600 for a gasket replacing pan and gasket has to be at least $2,500 from a dealer. At least I got a free (only 5,000 miles on the car) oil change.
