First 328i to die?

I was driving down the road everything was normal AC on auto 68F, outside temp around 120F ish indicated by the temp gauge. I started to slow down since I was about to turn and right as I hit about 25mph BAM my engine died and the check engine/service engine soon light came on. With no power anything I was lucky I am not weak and was able to pull it off to the side of the road, I am just lucky traffic was light or I might of gotten hit by an oncoming car while turning. Anyways pulled over I put the car into P and hit the start button, no answer, hit it again and the car fired up and no warning lights at all.

I called the BMW number and they told me not to drive the car anymore that day and to take it strait to the dealer or have it towed to the dealer in the morning..

Does this sound like a fuel pump issue? Thats the first thing that came to my mind, I know its not overheating since I had no reduced power warning ect and I wasnt driving the car hard at all on that trip I never went over 4k rpm.

Anyways I take the car in tomorrow I will keep everyone posted.

Weird... 328s have been bug free for the most part, will be interesting to see what the deal is.

Oh I forgot to add that this is the same location that my old E46 M3 had an SMG issue and need to be towed to the dealer but at the time I was turning left but from the opposite side.. Dam intersection is cursed.

Too many possibilities to start speculating what the cause was. You did the right thing by calling your dealer and taking it in to get checked out.

Have there been any reports of fuel pump problems with the 328i?

Wow. Hope it was a one time issue. Since you're in AZ, there could be a couple of other causes:

1. Hot, hot, hot.... wasn't it like 118 there yesterday? (in the valley)
2. Since the PHX valley is a hotspot for UFO's, let's not rule out a huge electromagnetic pulse from an alien ship overhead. Sometimes they just like to screw with people, but they may also have had more sinister plans. Are you missing any time? Does your butt hurt?

I think #2 is probably the most likely explanation.

But seriously, hope it's not a real problem - let us know.

not before arming himself with some rooster blood and goat horns

Andrew, keep us updated man, hopefully it's not the fuel pump, but as Steve said, it's too early to speculate right now.

Unrelated, but I would like to thank you on behalf of San Diego County for staying in Arizona and not adding to the traffic slowdowns caused by the other Zonies plaguing our streets and freeways - driving 5mph under the speed limit with the left turn signal in the 'perma-on' position.

Related: probably the alien thing, but if not please keep us posted.

Thanks Again! (hope its something minor!)

my friends 328 coupe died 3 hours after she left the Monrovia, CA dealership! the engine just completely stopped in the middle of the freeway.

She got a new car replaced instead of being repaired. it could've been a defect but who knows ...

That sucks...Hopefully it's not the start of a pattern. Don't tell my wife; she's waiting for her E92 328 to arrive at the PDC.

I lthinl Leds onto something ....something else you might want to check is it is is mostly likely the water pump defect causing overheating, my buddy and I had e39's when they first came out 528i's and they both had one such episode. Once the sensor detects a potential overheat it shuts the car down. resulting in no engine damage The car probably didn't need to., if it was a ford you probbaly would have kept driving thinking nothing of it more concerned with what aliens might be lurking around the next corner Technology sucks sometimes.

Ok just dropped it off they are going to look at this afternoon. My SA is out of town and I got a new guy and he said "it might be like your computer crashing and just a one time thing..." great that makes me feel good about this car, I have had my computer for 2 years (powerbook) and the only time its crashed was because of a bad memory chip and that was the first day I owned it and I got a brand new replacement and havent had a problem since.

About overheating I doubt it, I have never had a car overheat in my life I used to drive the crap out of my old M3 and it never got anywhere close to it.

Plus yesterday I had only driven the car 1/2 mile before it died and before that it was off for 8 hours in the garage. And again I had no lights come up before hand no reduce power message it just died bam.
