Which floor jack should I get? 1.5, 2 or 3 ton?
I am looking for a new aluminum racing floor jack (from Harbor Freight), I'm not sure which one I should buy? 1.5 ton? 2 ton? or 3 ton?
Thanks for your advice.

if you're going with the 3 ton...go with the costco one. For $104 dollars you can't beat it, low profile and had solid reviews. The downside, it's super heavy.

I had a terrible experience with a harbor freight jack. It failed on me when I had the front end of my car jacked up and it got stuck. Imagine the fun I had after that.
I would recommend getting a good quality one. For a couple hundred bucks you can get a fairly decent jack. No reason to be cheap about this when your expensive car and your own safety are in at stake.

On a more serious note, don't get the harbor freight because they do not last. Spend a little more and get a better one.

I've had a Craftsman for years but it was too tall to get under the BMW jack points. I went with Harbor Freight Pittsburgh 68054 1.5 Ton jack. It goes down to 3.5 inch and extends to 17.75 which is a very nice range. I've used it quite a few times and I find it very handy as it has a long reach and a low front. Only drawback is the amount of room you need to operate the handle. I've had a few occasions where I pulled off the second section of the handle which works but at reduced leverage. I always work with jackstands too but I have every confidence this jack will last a long time.

I have the 1.5ton and its been working fine for me. Keep in mind the greater the weight rating, the bigger it will be, and the less likely it will fit under your car (especially if you lower it).
1.5 ton should be enough because you're at most lifting half the car at a time. Even if the car is 4000lbs, you are only lifting 2000 (1 ton) or less.

I got a 2 1/4 ton floor jack from O'rielly's for like $120-130ish. That extra 500 lbs. gives me peace of mind when my car is lifted up off the ground. I wouldn't buy just a 2 ton.

A floor jack only lifts part of the car. A 1.5 ton jack will lift 3,000 pounds! Even if he put it in the middle and not on a pad and happened to lift half of the car weight of a 4'000 lb (2 ton) car that would leave him 1,000 lbs left. I mean if you plan on buying an 18 wheeler by all means go for the 3 ton. That was one hell of a run on sentence!

The Harbor Freight 1.5 ton racing jack works fine for me ($59.99 on sale) and it's light weight - just play it safe and use a jack stand or two.

i actually just bought the smaller of the two 1.5 ton racing jacks available from harbor freight and so far it works OK. its compact and light which makes it perfect for taking it to the track especialy if you lots of other stuff to bring.
i only have two complaints, one is on my lowered vechicle even though it slides under the car nicely i still need to put a small piece of 2x4 on the pad just to jack it up high enough to get the jack stands under the car. the bigger floor jack goes up higher so that wouldve been a better option but the the small one is still great for track days. last complaint is when lowering vehicle the slightest turn of the handle can drop the car very fast so be cautious. ive also have the costco 2 ton racing jack for almost 10 yrs and it works great still, only problem with that one is it also drops vey quickly at the slightest turn of the handle and is very heavy. i keep that one at my parents house in N.Y. and also like some one said before 1.5 tons is plenty for a car that weighs 3,500lbs, you have to realize your only jacking up half the car at the most which would make it around 1,750lbs with a jack capable of 3,000lbs. but regardless of any floor jacks capablity i would never get under the car unless its secure with jackstands. |

I bought the Costco jack, it is very good quality but it is very heavy. It's made by Arcan, when I went to get my tires installed last week the tire shop had about 4 floor jacks laying around and all of them were made by this company.
I also have a couple harbor freight floor jacks too, one of them is leaking hydraulic fluid, but still works. Buy the bigger floor jack, they tend to lift higher as well, make sure it's a low pro jack especially if you have a 3 series or smaller. I'm also a believer of having at least 2 floor jacks and more jack stands than you need. I have a back up to my back up when I get under the car, not worth being discovered by your loved ones looking like a pancake.

I use a 3.5 tonne jack. I like the piece of mind mainly and I use to use it on my old Xterra. That thing weighed closer to 5000lbs, but I liked to pack up half the vehicle at a time. Certain areas, bigger is better. A jack is one of them. I forget what kind it is though, but we've had it now for something like 5 years and along with our impact wrench they've paid for themselves many times over. 4 sets of tires, twice per year.

FYI don't tell your spouse to "grab the floor jack" on her way to Costco, the thing weighs 101 pounds.
