Mounting EZ pass under rearview?
How close can I mount my new EZ Pass under the rearview mirror? I see that there's a "grille" on the front of the mirror, and I read in the manual that the car senses exterior light through there to control mirror dimming (at least that's how I read it -- I see that there's an electric eye mounted directly into where the rearview attaches to the glass, possibly for the rain sensore, but it sounds like maybe there's also something that wants to peek out from underneath that grille.)
So, if there is something happening under the grille, any idea how much space I need to leave? I'd like to keep it as flush as possible, as I'm mounting a radar detector under the EZpass, and I don't want to block my view, overly. If it matters, the EZ Pass housing is an off-white. Thanks... |

I got one of those suction cup holders and put it to the right of the rearview along the top edge of the windshield. Never gave it any thought after day 1...are you saying it could interfere with something? I think my autodim works properly....

OP: I can't answer your original question, but one guy on here said he has his EZ Pass in the trunk so you could consider alternate locations. |

Basically, it lets you drive through tollbooths without stopping. Used in some states in the northeast like PA, NY, NJ, MD, WV, etc. |

i put my ipass (illinois version) on the left where the top of the dashboard meets the bottom of the windshield. also have my parking pass for the garage i park in there (live downtown, need another ipass thing to get into my garage).
it's a good spot, out of the way, not on the windshield, but you can still tell its there.

My E-Z Pass is just to the right of the "grill" area you refer to and about 1/2 inch from the top. Works fine and no interference with anything.

Mine is all the way up to the trim and works. I painted the outward facing side black and the sides themselves. It is held up with two thin strips of velcro, black of course.

Ok, should have explained more clearly:
I'd like to mount it under the rearview mirror, because I'm using the EZ pass to somewhat camouflage the cordless radar detector (basically mounting the detector just underneath it, so a quick glance from the exterior won't reveal it). I thus can't mount it on the right side of rearview because I couldn't see the radar detector from there, and I think mounting it to the left will be too much in my normal field of vision. (Though I'll check that out to be sure.) So, again - and partially I'm just curious - does anyone know what that grille at the end of the rearview mirror is for, if I can block it, and if not how much space I should leave? Thanks again! |

I'll search for this, but if you have a link or something, that'd be much appreciated.

Mine is mounted just under the mirror on the windshield and everything works fine. After reading this thread, though, I may move it to a less obvious location. Turnpike Authority says to mount it ONLY in this location for proper operation, but I've heard the sucker beep even when it's laying in the console!

I put on the Velcro strips but positioned the EZ pass in a position that the rear view mirror blocks it from my line of sight. Totally invisible to the driver. PLUS, I went one step further. I found that looking at the white rectangle through the windshield was esthetically objectionable as well. So I painted the EZ pass black, except for the sticker and bar code on the interior side. You can still see the Velcro strips, but much better looking. Now I just need black Velcro strips!

Here in CA or at least in the Bay Area it's called FasTrack. I just keep mine in the center console and when i'm about to pass the toll i just pull it out and put it on my dash. Works fine and you don't have to mount it anywhere. The other option is to have suction cups but IMO i don't like the look of it.
