Car wash and comfort access....how not to get locked out of your car?

So I got comfort access on my car and it was great when using it in europe now I'm waiting for it to arrive in NY. I have a question.

If I take my car to the car wash..... leave it running (after putting it in neutral) can I leave the car with the ignition on and walk into the car wash (with the keys on me) to pay for the services? I'm assuming it wont just SHUT down for no reason (like because the key is no INSIDE the car). ?

Anyone know?

Also any tips for using comfort access? I'm not used to it because my current car doesn't have this feature...I found it amazing just don't want to end up in any bad situations.

I don't quite get what you're trying to accomplish here. You want to get out of your car while the car is on the rail going into the carwash?

No, it will not shut down. This is one of my favorite features -- I am able to park my car, step out, lock it and walk inside of a convenience store or something all while my car is still running.

Walk back up, it unlocks, drive off. Great for the winter.

I'm not sure about doing it in neutral though.... Never tried that and I'm not sure I'd want to.

If you are going to put the car on rails, I recommend you putting they key in the ignition like you would like a normal car. One less thing to explain, one less thing to worry about.

I believe if you walk out of range, the car will turn itself off after an X amount of seconds.

hmm... Maybe. I've stepped out for 10+ minutes with the car running and keys in my pocket (got caught up doing something) and the car was still running.

1) Anyone know the range?
2)What is that X amount of seconds? (just curious but from the post above the guy left it for 10 minutes.....still running)

Not true. It won't shut off after any length of time due to safety concerns. In fact, it will even restart if you kill the engine and then start it again within 10 seconds.

I could've sworn mine shutoff when I went back into my house. I will have to try it later, as I'm not with my car at the moment. Our Lexus definitely turns off.

Actually, it's the marketing dept. that had the last laugh on the Sales guys by calling it COMFORT access. What the heck has it got to do with comfort??

I love the CA threads... But then I love CA...

With CA you can get out of your running car, fob in pocket, lock the door and do whatever the hell you want... Your poor car will sit there and Idle till it's out of gas.

When hand washing your car, toss the fob inside water will no longer trigger the door locks.

When taking it to a carwash stick the fob in the slot in the dash and you don't have anything to worry about, it acts like any other car out there.

BMW made CA Idiot proof... They just didn't know quite how good our North American idiots can be...

At most tunnel washes around here they turn the car off when in the tunnel.

My car locked once going through a tunnel wash with the key in the center tray, shouldn't happen but it did. I have since been told to insert the key into the slot, this disables CA making sure you don't get locked out.

Just this morning I left my car running for 10 minutes while in the house with the key in my pocket. It should run all day once started without the key.

If you start the car and get out of the car or drive away without a key the e9x CA system will beep with a dash symbol to let you know a key is not in the car. The e9x CA system doesnt shut off without the key but it should instead of warning you as soon as the key leaves the car. MBs shut down without a key and BMWs should work this way.

In a MB if carjacked the car will run for either a set amount of time or a set distance before shutting off. The car and its thief is far enough away - a couple blocks - not to be able to run back and harm you for the key. You are safe and your car is not going any further before the police arrive. BMW should take notes on this feature.

That could be quite dangerous though. On one occasion I dropped my wife off outside a restaurant and went to park, not realizing she had the keys in her purse and mine were at home. I don't know how I didn't notice the warning message, but I ended up driving around for a while trying to find a spot and if the car had suddenly shut down I could have caused an accident.
