2006 323i for sale
Up for sale is my 2006 323i. It is fully loaded with the following options:
Price: On stock 16's $13250 Including Style 197s: $14000 -Sport Suspension -Sport Seats (Very desireable, adjustable bolsters) -Sport Suspension -Oem Style 192 wheels with new tires -OEM Style 155 16" alloys with newish winter tires -Black leather -6spd manual transmission -Projector Headlights -35% tint all around ALL ORIGINAL PAINT. NO ACCIDENTS!!!!! **My car has recently started to develop a diff whine from the input bearing. The car works perfectly, its just a little noisy. I was quoted $500 for a used diff from Standard Auto Wreckers and 2 hrs of labor to put it in. Anyone with a little bit of mechanical skill could do it themselves. That is the reason for the lower price of this car. Other than the above issue, the car is perfect! |

The 323i seems to have some sort of diff issue. I have heard my car, as well as various other ones around town with the same symptoms. I never fixed the problem and ended up getting rid of the car all together.
This wasn't without a fight though... Originally I picked up a 330i diff which has a different input shaft. I then picked up the driveshaft for it which should have worked, but the 323i axles are too long. I then picked up a 328i diff and driveshaft thinking it might work... and it didnt. All in all I pulled the rear diff out of my car three times and did not fix the problem. Your options are as follows: 1) buy a 328i/330i differential, driveshaft, and axles. Swap the lot. (probably close to $1000, maybe less if you shop around 2) Buy a used 323i diff if you can, but they don't come up often and are way overpriced. 3) Buy a brand new diff from the dealer (talk to mike @ maranello) I think they went for about $1800. All of these options were too much money for a 323i which is slow as FUCK, so I decided to cut my losses and sell the thing. What a terrible design BMW! |

I think I found the bearings online for anyone who has this problem, they are very expensive, but if you cannot find a new diff this will help. http://www.bearingkits.co.uk/PAIR-BM...MALL)/449.htm#

Awesome thread. I didn't realize that it was a broad problem.
My 323i Step also suffer from this infamous high pitch noise. I never realized the problem until the dealer said so in a test drive. They quoted 3600$... over my dead body. I think that my car will just die like this... it doesn't bother me.... unless it gets worse (?). According to realoem, both 323i/328i shares the same final drive ratio at 3.73 but have different part no.... i.e. your input shaft issue. Txs for the info. Quote:
