Handbrake lever cover removal?

BMW offers a nice-looking red/black parking brake handle for ZSL F30s.

Has anyone figured out how to get the factory-installed one off and how to put the accessory replacement on?

Some videos I found on YouTube talking about E46 replacements talk about removing glue and re-gluing the new handle.

I can't believe that would need to be done two generations later!

If you know how this part comes off or have done the replacement, pix here would be appreciated.

Garage List
The handbrake assembly looks fairly straightforward according to this diagram.

Have you tried giving the handbrake lever (4) a gentle tug/twist to see if it moves? Looks like it should just slide off, although you may need to remove the gaiter (3) first.

Is this the handbrake cover you mean? Looks nice. Would think that if BMW sell it as an 'accessory' then it should be relatively easy to fit (famous last words!)

OK well I popped my handbrake cover off by mistake.. Its actually pretty easy to do that.. Just pull on the piece outwards and It'll come off. The leather peice at the back is only attached on their with a plastic piece which comes off pretty easily.. Installing it back is a bitch though..

Here is the plastic tie..

What's the issue in putting the piece back on?

Appreciate your reply.

It's exactly the problem of it not fitting perfectly that would make me reluctant to swap it out.

I don't know why manufacturers sell accessories that aren't engineered to be easy to replace.

I would take it somewhere so they can do it for you. I would HATE to mess that up and have it look like crap afterwards!

That looks nice, any tips on how to remove/fit the parts?

Also, I don't usually go for carbon fibre in the cabin but that gear shift and surround looks rather good

So I gave this a shot today and can't get the leather bag back on. It looks like you posted a picture here of the plastic piece that ties it back together but the picture isn't showing up. Could you post this picture again or tell me how I can get the bag back on because right now the edges of the leather bag are exposed and look very unfinished. Thank you!

You should be able to fold the edges around the clip and then pull it over the level knob...

Thanks! I picked up a package of these plastic ties and was able to re-attach the leather bag properly. Appreciate your help.

New handbrake cover

I've just installed the red and black handbrake cover on my 335i, and here is what I learned.

Step 1. The flexible leather surround of the handbrake has to be unclipped at its WIDE end from the area around the gear lever. Pull up at the front and then unclip the handbrake cover from the transmission tunnel.

Step 2. Pull the flexible leather cover all the way over the handbrake, so you can see the backside of the cover. Carefully clip off the plastic zip tie that secures the leather cover to the handbrake cover. You will need a replacement for this zip tie.

Step 3. Pull off the handbrake cover. On my car it was stiff, but it does pull off towards the front of the car - you just have to be persistent.

Step 4. Push on the new handbrake cover, making sure it snaps into place. Make sure also that it's the correct way up.

Step 5. Re-attach the flexible leather cover in the same way it came off, that is, with the leather cover inside out. Make sure the seams on the covers align. Add the zip tie and tighten it. Note that the small end of the leather cover is attached onto the new handbrake cover groove, with the leather edge pointing to the back of the car.

Step 6. Pass the wide end of the leather cover over the handbrake and, rear end first, clip back onto the transmission tunnel.

That's it!
