Overheating - 2006 BMW 325I
So obviously I'm on here because I need some help...about a week ago my 06 325i started to overheat no other warning but straight to red overheating alarm. In response I changed the thermostat, flushed the coolant (which was very low) changed the oil and filter (as it was due anyhow). The oil should no signs of water so I ruled out the head gasket. So problem solved....so i thought! Today on a road trip pulling a fairly steep grade with A/C on the engine again alarmed a red overheating alarm. I pulled over as soon as i could popped the hood and seen coolant had came out of the expansion tank.
I am completely at a loss. The car does not overheat when the A/C is off and just the other night my wife pulled the same grade with no problem. Is it the water pump, expansion tank, sensor? By the way, the fan kicks on. The car has been completely BMW maintained, maintenance plan warranty expired last October and i am the original owner. The car has about 90k miles. I want to pull my hair out as i am completely at a loss please send me ideas. Thanks in advance. Last edited by threedimensions; 07-21-2012 at 12:03 PM.. |

The pump usually causes overheating - the thermostat fails to a full open position, to not cause an overheating condition. I won't say typical, but 90K mls is not unusual for the pump to fail.
Check this and the N52 engine sub-forums, there are a number of well-documented threads. And the DIY forum for changing the pump. |

Most likely it's the water pump. Your car's overheating symptoms are the same as others with 2006 E90s. Pump is electric driven and many times the first indication prior to a complete failure is low pump RPMs. That explains why it overheats on high loads in the cooling system. It appears that the 2006 models have a higher incidence of failure. BMW has upgraded the pump design so hopefully your replacement will be more reliable.

Thanks for the feedback, my fist assumption was the water pump as I had read other forum postings speaking to the failure of the water pump and/or impeller. I will go with that and let you guys know if that solves the problem.

The water pump fails around 100k, its more due to hours not miles, its electric and not driven by a belt.
Pump should be $450 thermostat $150, maybe 2 hours of labor at a good indy bmw shop. Order from (East Coast) getbmwparts.com or bmwpartspros.com (West Coast) |

Same thing happened to me a week or two ago, coolant seemed to come out of the expansion tank. Assumed it was a the water pump after browsing the forums and changed that and the Tstat at the same. All is good now.
