So how many of you 2012 Pioneers broke a wheel on those run flats yet?

...still considering whether to self-insure...

Bought the insurance for $1500. Well worth it since the tires are $500 a pop and the rims are as well. Only have the car 2 days but I live in NYC, so I'm sure I'll christen them before the warranty runs out

Got it on my 2009. Lost 4 tires. Paid $0. Insurance is higher this time around and they have a $50 deductible. Still beats paying hundreds out of pocket for a single tire. Pays for itself in just two tires. Insurance lasts for 5 years.

Have it on my Mercedes and have replaced 4 AMG rims and 4 tires in 2 years (bill would've been around $5k without the insurance). Well worth the $1000 I paid for it...

Cant you just not get run flats and take the risk?

I guess having your car towed is less than a new run flat tire. Or, you'll have to have room to store a spare in your trunk. I absolutely loved my 2000 5-series. Full spare with complete BMW rim in the spare tire compartment. Get a flat? Good as new in 15 minutes. On the road again with 4 tires and matching rims. Awesome.

There should be no wheel or tire problems other than the occasional minor disaster, such as hitting a severe pothole without seeing it - an accident that would damage any wheel wearing any tire.

Unless you routinely damage wheels with conventional tires I would not give it further thought. If you do, consider the insurance.

While 2012 is the first MY of the F30, this won't affect the quality of the wheels. This is more of personal question of, "Do I tend to bend wheels in potholes/drive in high speed & pothole heavy areas?"

Not sure why you ask if it is worth it, it is an insurance. The insurance price is based on a lot more data than you will have on a forum and usually insurance companies do this for a profit. So it is pretty obvious that in average the insurance is not worth the price.

The best way to know if it is worth it for you is by knowing what your driving habits are and what kind of driving environment you have.

this is part true. Major purchases like a car or house you want insured, because the out of pocket on a total loss can bankrupt you but with minor items like wheels/tires, TVs, electronics, home appliances, you are better off not getting any warranties. 3 years in Chicago with my C63 and never had a flat tire or wheel problem, 15K miles on our X3 with run flats and no problems either. Just watch where you are going and if something happens pay out of pocket, over the next 10-20 years you will come out ahead...

I think its all relative to your situation. I live in NYC, a place with probably the worst roads outside of a 3rd world country and at $500 a pop for the p zeros and and $500 for a rim, 3 flats or bent rims in 3 yrs and the insurance pays for itself. I'd rather pay an extra $15 a mont for piece of mind than have to layout the money for a mishap. Just my opinion though.
