Wrecked white 1M in San Diego (Pics)
Saw this sad sight today in Mission Valley. Looks like he took the corner too fast, back end came around and smacked into the curb. Ouch!
9/4/12 update: Here's the on ramp - red arrow shows how traffic flows. It's a fast corner...if you want it to be. Bumpy though! This on ramp dumps you onto 55-60MPH traffic - so plenty of runway to get up to speed. Last edited by yfzcentral; 09-05-2012 at 12:24 AM.. Reason: adding picture |

That looks like way too much front end damage for just hitting the curb; the hood is crumpled, and I'd guess the left fender is in bad shape. Did you not stop to ask - not so much about the damage, but to make sure he was OK?

People were ok (they were out of the car). Pictures are with the tow truck operator doing his thing.
It might of smacked into the white cargo container. Can see a bit of rub on the corner. |

Looks like a T-bone, notice how the opposite (passenger) side blinker is yanked out completely and hanging only on its wiring harness. That's some serious side forces, more than what hitting a curb would do.

I'm going with a lot less than that. For every one where someone happens by with a camera there must be three we don't know about. I'd might guess first year attrition at around 1 in 20?

My biggest fear in this beast.
The back end is very keen to come out mid corner with the boost. Take care out there guys

I was hoping it wasn't your car man. To bad to see any of these cars end up this way.

I forgot that these situations typically involve those who dont stop to think that should be a top priority. Thanks for noting that!
As much as I absolutely LOVE EVERY SECOND of track time () I for one wish there were more skid pad/sliding/control HPDE's on the east coast! |

IMHO, there's no reason for the back-end coming out from under you unexpectedly if you're fully aware of what you're doing and conscious of your environment. If you're doing something stupid or outside of your abilities, well... bad things can happen.

I think we might be overanalyzing this without knowing further details of the crash. To me it looks like the 1M was hit from the side at a 90 degree impact, kinda like running through a red light or stop sign (or other car doing so). If that is the case, no 'upgraded' rubber or high performance driver ed would be of much help...

Yes but I'm not casting stones. I have been caught off guard myself by the surge of thrust. For our entire generation they keep building understeer into cars and finally we get this little beast that can bite back if you put the spurs in a bit too hard. I was shocked that the first 1m that I was trying to get was given to an 18 year old as a gift. Talk about questionable judgement. I hope the kid doesn't hurt the car and more importantly himself or others. This car is not a beginners toy and even mature experienced drivers can get in trouble in a hurry.

Maybe you remember the "Greystone Tragedy" of January 2008. Kid of 18 got his father's E60 M5 and visited a night party at the airstrip near John Travolta's house. Five people aboard (aged between 18 and 20) enjoyed 15 minutes of 507hp M5 racing fun, racing up and down the airstrip. But then it all went horribly wrong: running out of airstrip - braking to no avail past the point of no return - airborne for 200 feet at ± 120mph - ending up in the tries. All five died. Horrible tragedy. May their souls rest in peace. http://www.ocala.com/article/20080127/NEWS/801270355 http://www.ocala.com/assets/jpg/news...tone_crash.png Just before the fatal accident, the 18 year old driver had posted on m5board.com, talking about driving with max settings, adding though that he was a "beginner when it comes to high performance cars". Some questioned his attitude towards speed: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...ts-m-mode.html

There's no shame in traction control folks. Its actually a really good tool. Just not a lot of reason to be running around with dsc completely off on city streets in my opinion. |
