Curb Rash - Day 12
I know it's happened to practically everyone, but I just got back from receiving my first curb rash. Just have to vent... man I'm pissed. It's under 3 inches and tucked in somewhat to the wheel, so it could have been worse, so I'll take that. Just trying to decide if I should go ahead with the repair or wait a few months. Can't justify dropping 300 bones for this small of a mark.
Was with the wife, pleasant evening, going to Graeter's. Oh, she mentions, I need to pick up something at the pharmacy drive through next door really quick. No prob. The call button is far from my reach, so I move in a bit closer. SHRRRRR... WTF!? What's that? Oh, the fucking curb is 18 inches wide - awesome! Sorry to vent. I don't expect any sympathy, as again, I know everyone's dealt with it. This first one's a bitch to swallow though.

I've scuffed many nice BMW wheels and got tired of paying to get them fixed so now I do it myself. Get a dremel power tool and sand the rough area smooth Buy some silver metalic paint and gray and alternate coats until you get it close in color. I've done this for 4-5 cars now and it looks really good and costs $5 if you have a dremel. Look at it this way, even if you do a bad repair job it probably will still look better.

I know how you feel, did the same thing pulling out of the hospital garage to swipe my badge. Only had the car a week, hurt my feelings. I let the mobile wheel repair man that I had at the Mercedes dealership fix it for $75. It was just worth it to me cause I had only had the car such a short time. I've now had the car 3 months and not one single other scratch. Taught me.

Knock on wood my rims are still have no curb rash after almost a year........my advice is to make turns like you drive a truck and keep your distance from everything...even if you do scratch them its not really a big deal since they can be fixed so easily..

It sucks; but everyone's had it happen to them. Did it to mine 8 days after getting the car. Learned that lesson real fast.

I have the best story on this, I have not curbed any of my wheels...yet, knock on wood. So I start working this new job and the Boss needs me to take his Cayenne to a show (It's on 22's) everything goes fine at the show the SUV is nice and clean no issues so I take it home for the weekend instead of driving back to work.
As I go to pull into a parking space next to an island I am not used to the size of the Cayenne and I end scraping the crap out of the front wheel also putting a little dent in it since I ended up popping up the curb too. Needless to say the wheel was F$%*ed, thank god I didn't damage the tire. I tell you what though I was scared shitless come Monday, being that I was a newbie and I just jacked up the Bosses Cayenne. I must say he was totally cool and understood, all I could think was PHEWWWW.... |

For you guys who have hit curbs..... just wondering if anyone has active steering? I don't have it, but it is my understanding it takes a little while to get used to it, and the biggest thing to worry about is turning a bit to sharp and running up on a curb.

Sorry to hear about the curb rash. I felt the same and right after I scraped my front wheel I wanted to do something about it. Well, about 6 months have passed and I've gotten over the crush of the damage, and I don't really care to do anything about it. If it is small I would not fix it now as you may have future rashes in the future??(knock on wood) and may just want to fix the wheel at that time. If it isn't totally obvious, I'd let it be and save the money for other things

Update: My emotions have since settled down. Upon casual re-observation, I've noticed it's really not that noticable - could easily pass as a small smudge of brake dust. I called my local BMW and they gave me a ballpark of $110, 1/2 day of no car. I think I'm going to wait a few months and see how things go from there - no repair for now. Thanks for the replies.
About the Active Steering - no, I do not have it.

That is why I hate drive up tellers and what not. My girlfriend makes fun of me all the time because i end up a foot away from the machine. But even though I have stock rims I'd rather not go through the hassle.
