I couldn't believe Autozone didn't have a filter on the books for my 330i.

Don't go to Autozone. You want an OEM Mann HU816Z, available at Amazon.

Some Advance Auto Parts have MANN HU816.
Other then that, FCP, ECSTuning, etc. Buy in bulk.
Also MANN, Mahle or Hengst, those three brands are one you want to go with.

Under NO circumstances experiment with oil filter on B48/58 engine!!!
You want OE, MANN, Mahle or Hengst. There were issues where bottom part of some filters would stay glued in oil filter housing. 14hrs job!!!

I agree with your brand likes, but I was getting Mann at Autozone. Now, nothing.

I can't speak to Bosch, I've only ever used Mann. Others here can provide more input, as my experience is limited. My F30 is the only only BMW I've ever had and I've had it less than 3 years. I can tell you I replace my oil every 5,000 with the Mann filter kit and the oil that comes out is very clean.

FWIW- I buy the Castrol oil at Walmart and the filters on Amazon which makes the maintenance pretty inexpensive. The F30 is by far the easiest oil change of any car I've ever owned, which was a present surprise.

Lastly, for anyone doing their first oil change (like the OP), don't forget to pickup a 16 flute oil filter wrench for BMW's. Below is a link to the brand I have (although mine is an older style)…

The X suffix is for xDrive only. It includes a new crush washer for the metal drain plug. Without xDrive the Z suffix is the correct filter. It includes a new plastic drain plug, which are single use only.

Maybe. It must have the correct crush washer or plastic drain plug per above. Also, numerous reports of cap leaks have been traced to the new cap O-rings with other than OEM brands being the wrong size. OEM brands are no more expensive and work just as well as off-brands, so there's no reason for not getting the real thing.

I don't think so. BOSCH probably sources its filters from MANN or Mahle.
How snug is when you fit on oil cap and that plastic mesh? If it is not snug, switch to MANN, Mahle or Hengst. If everything fits properly, you are fine.

Used Bosch and Mann, never had an issue with Bosch. Just dont use a cheap brand you've not heard of in case it breaks up inside the housing...

I don't think that is true. The oil filter should be the same regardless of RWD or AWD.

RealOEM shows my oil filter as part number 11427953129. HU816X matches that OEM part number:

Either way, I've done oil changes every 5,000 miles every since the car was built.

xDrive has a steel oil pan and uses a steel drain plug. RWD has a plastic oil pan and uses a plastic drain plug. The filter element is the same with X or Z variants, the hardware that comes with them is not. Both the crush washer with the X and the drain plug with the Z versions are one time use only, so you'd best get the right one.

My oil pan isn't plastic. I think that's an n20 thing? Op says he has a 335

Could be, since I have an N20 I never had reason to investigate an N55 oil filter. If that's the case my apologies for adding to the level of confusion.
