Knocking on idle?

Just noticed that my car's started to make a knocking-ish noise on idle. It's done 1300kms, and its audible in and outside the car. I've attached a recording of the sound up but you need to turn it up a bit to hear it in the background.

At first I thought maybe the car wasn't warmed up properly, but after the oil temp gauge got up to operating temp the sound was still there Any ideas?

Lightweight clutch. Does it change when you depress the clutch pedal?

Haha, that's a weird cricket noise! Mine doesn't sound like that, the noise seems to go away if I'm doing anything but idling.

I forgot to take notice when pressing the clutch, I'll check it out tonight If it is though, does that mean another faulty part?

If the sound is indeed the clutch, it is totally normal. It's been on every M car I've owned....

Seems like the sound has gone away subsequent drives :S I guess it's fixed itself?

Anyway, how does a light clutch cause that sort of sound?

Two causes:

the springs on the clutch disc fatigue or settle after some use. Then they are slightly compressed in the clutch disc, as the clutch rotates with the engine... at low speeds you can hear the clutch "rattling".

Also... the dual mass flywheel will rattle somewhat at idle. You hear it when you switch off the engine with your foot off the clutch in neutral. This is why I always turn off my engine with the clutch pedal depressed. I don't think it does any damage... I just don't like that sound.

I believe the 1M uses a similar dual mass flywheel... just that it is light than the 135i unit. The 1M clutch setup is the same as the Z4is3.5 (6MT).

Both rattle sounds are quite normal and cause no long term issues for the clutch life,
