K&N airfilter now ready for our cars....

I just got an e-mail directly from K&N which said they now have a drop in replacement air filter for our cars. Check out this link.

yeah, I saw a pic the other day. strange shape.

So do you think it will make a difference?

I had a k&n in my old e46. Not sure if it made a difference.

Any comments from anyone?

Interested to know as well. I would be tempted by this, after all it is a simple way to enhance performance.

However, I live in a dusty area, would the filtration ability be compromised to the point where I coul have warranty issues.

And does anyone know whether the OBD could pick up the switch.

If you worry about the dirt in your engine, please stay away from KN filter. It is not for you. If you want to see if you can gain a few horses , just try using old panty hose for filtration device. There is possibility the placebo effect works better on you than me.

If you decide to install the KN, make sure you change oil and filter more frequently. Of course, if you lease your vehicle, any thing goes.

Thanks.

I guess I'll just have to get the 330/335 next time instead.

The only real difference it will make is allow more filth to get into your engine. I saw a study on this once and the K&N filters better than a BMW filter for the first few hundred kilometers and then filters worse for the rest of its life.

Think about it... especially the 330i guys... you already have a 3-stage intake manifold, do you think your engine will run out of air at the high end??

The only guys who might see a little high-rpm advantage is guys with the "detuned" 325i and 323i powerplants. Even then, what, like half a horse power?

underDAWG and epiphone said it well. The factory air filter element is far superior to the K & N and other oil wetted (1940s technology) filters for street cars.

Hello all

I just purchased an 06 330i and attempted to replace stock air filter with k&n thinking it's quick job...however, there is one screw that I can't get to with my tools and it's at an impossible angle. I cant get the airfilter box seperated unless that screw is out
any suggestions??? Also, I saw the comment on the already existing 3 stage intake system the car has so going to a k&n won't make sense and waste????

Wow old thread! What screw are you talking about? The two bolts close to the fender are pretty straightforward. The one on the tube with the maf just needs to be loosened. It's a metal clamp so just loosen it enough to pull the airbox out.

I think you are trying to take apart the box while it is still in the car. You have to take the whole airbox out before you can open in. Follow this DIY up to the point that you have the airbox out. Then just simply put in the new filter and reverse the steps:

Old thread to revive but...

Why do people claim putting a k&n drop in filter is worse than the OEM filter? Should I just buy an OEM air filter and replace mine? How come you have to change your oil and oil filter more often with a k&n? I thought k&n was superior to any oem air filters..

Thanks

Old thread but I will answer anyway.
The OEM filter is not just a paper filter, but also a charcoal filter. It is quite restricting, but also superior filtration. The K&N Drop in gets rid of the charcoal and opts for paper only. It does allow for better breathing but will get dirty quicker and at that point dust/dirt particles will get pushed with the air through into your intake---hence, change it more often.

i heard K&N needs to be reoiled and sometimes that oil messes up sensors (MAF etc). I have never used K&N, Autozone filters are shit too (not oiled, just dry paper). Use OEM oiled filter.

Sorry, mispost from my phone.

^^^KN filters are made of cotton gauze, not paper, and are oiled such that the dirt gets trapped in the fibers and is NOT pulled into the intake. You never have to replace a KN but you do have to clean and reoil it every so often.

K&N Filters are layered and oiled cotton not paper. K&N does not breathe as well as plain paper filters.

The stock air filter does not have charcoal. The cabin air filter has charcoal.

On top of that when they are freshly cleaned they allow through more dirt not less. Over time the dirt and dust that builds up on them traps smaller particulate matter. You also don't change the filter more often, you don't change it at all, you clean and re-oil a K&N filter.

Way to resurrect a thread to answer a question with total misinformation. Literally everything you said is incorrect except that this is an old thread.

I agree with what you say, when you market well, you can sell just about anything you want to anybody you want. Actually, I've had that junk in my Nissan for about 11 years. But I would never put it in the 335i. Never.
