UK Car Insurance
I have just purchased a white 1M through the BMW AUC network. I'll be collecting the car hopefully end of this week, if not early next. Performance seats and prep being done at the moment.
I question though, I have insured it fine, but the insurance company made a mistake that they are having to honour... So they initially classed it as a M135i... Now they have actually insured it at as a 1M, they have agreed to swallow the extra £300 cost and the fact that they would have insisted on a tracker device. So I am 41, clean licence and no accidents. Good postcode and car garaged overnight, 6000 miles a year. So I would have thought a low risk. But the cost (would have been around the £800 mark) and the fact that a tracker was requested has me confused. My M3 CSL 4 years ago was cheaper to insure! What are others paying and trackers required? |

Congrats on the purchase. I would think you'd be able to get insurance cheaper than that and without a tracker. I'm in london, 28 with only 5 yrs ncb, and cheapest quote i got when car was stock was around a £1000 but with no tracker required. Considering your slightly older and assume would have more ncb than i do, and you are outside london, you should be able to get a cheaper price without a tracker, maybe trying all the specialist insurers etc.

I'm 33, have a clean license (13 years NCB) and a modded 1M (all parts declared) and I've literally just renewed (two days ago) for £659.00. Mine is garaged, social use only and I've got it down for 9000 PA (estimated mileage).

Okay sounds a similar story then. I'll wait the 12 months and see what happens come renewal. I'll hunt around if necessary. So on this subject and inlight of recent and known BMW OBD port issues, anyone use an additional steering wheel lock or similar when leaving the car? At least until BMW have a fix. |

I have just renewed a few weeks ago for £380. I'm 39 with full ncd, no claims/points, no tracker required. My wife being on the policy brings the premium down over £100, worth a try if you haven't already.

To chip in also just renewed policy, I'm 29, almost 30 , 7rs NCB, secure car park, average postcode, social only 7000 miles pa. Quotes with Confused Meerkat ranged between £650-850 depending on the excess. I stayed with Admiral who even gave me an extra £100 off just for asking and came to under £750 with around £500 volutary XS.
Asked specifically about extra security and tracker. Lady with Admiral said little difference. Any extra security aids no difference, modifications may add to premium. Although the ODB port is a problem looks like the insurers are being sensible, unlike the pistonheads lot who were predicting insurance apocalypse. Ask your insurers whether insuring the car on a driveway would be lower risk. A friend cheapen theirs by stating kept on drive rather than garage as apparenly joe public are good at crashing cars whilst parking in them. |

I think I am going to invest in the Thatcham approved StopLock as a deterrent until the OBD issue has been resolved. And peace of mind. |

This is why you need a tracking device on any new BMW...
Video: My BMW 1M Coupe Stolen in 3 Min as Part of Recent UK BMW Theft Spree Using OBD http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=712717 BMW UK does have a SW patch for UK cars. Since your car is still at the dealer I would ask for the patch/fix. It basically will not let the cloning machine to add any new keys besides the two original key fobs. You HAVE to ask for the SW patch. Dack
