new shift knob help

i neeeed helpppp

So i installed a new light up shift knob which I purchased from bimmian.
(couldn't wait for the oem light up, and thought it would be a good practice to install a new knob until I could get my hands on the oem light up shift knob..)

What I did was this.

1. I unclipped the panel with cig jack+usb+aux behind the ebrake to check the wire colors that leads to the cigarette jack socket. (First Picture)

2. after verifying the colors of the wire (brown wire, green&yellow wire), I tapped in to the wires beside the shifter.
I didn't cut the wire, but rather peeled the insulator off a little to expose the wires and wrapped the shift knob led wires to the exposed cig jack wires.
After, I sealed up everything using the electrical tape. (Second Picture)

3. Now I'm getting a Airbag light and Seatbelt light.. (Third Picture)

Apparently this happens if you do any electrical work without disconnecting the battery first.

I talked to the support of the Bav Tech company and apparently the cable does not support the BMW 1M.

I talked to Terry from BMW and he told me that the warning lights can be deleted by JB4.

I don't really want to take it to the dealers either..

I've been driving around with this light on for 2 weeks now..

Anyone have any idea how I can clear these warning lights?

Thanks!

Airbag light went off by simply tapping into a 12V source without first disconnecting the battery?! That sounds a bit harsh.

Did you check diegorst's DIY in the main thread on back light shift knobs.

Man... those are some nasty looking electrical taps. Why the heck didn't you use some 3M crimp connectors or just piggy back some spade connectors. That looks scary, like a fire waiting to happen.

But yea... go to a dealer or indi and have your airbag codes cleared. Or buy a BT(BavTech) scan tool.~$280.

Haha don't worry. It's secure so no sparks will fly.
I was going to use crimping wire tap but didn't have any handy at the time.

I spoke with the BT cable support and they said that BMW 1M is not supported by the cable and won't work.

Maybe only way is to bring it to an independent shop.
But they were asking $70 just to take a look at it.. And to reset it is another additional charge.

Yea I saw that post.

I couldn't figure out where the gray/red wire goes, so I figured I play it safe and tap into the color I knew for sure that went to the cigarette jack source.

Hmm maybe I made a mistake. But the shift knob DO light up. So maybe I didn't.

I'll recheck my wires. Thanks!

I hope you used some electrical tape over those "connections".

I think any shop will charge you $100 to $200 to clear the airbag code(s). Maybe take it into a dealer and play dumb.

+1.

Yeah, 3M makes these connectors (Scotchlok) that let you safely and securely splice onto an existing wire without cutting or stripping.

Yes I definitely used electrical tape over the connections.
I will go buy some wire taps to make everyone (including myself) happy hahah

I spoke with a friend that works at BMW and he told me that if the airbag light is on, they will do a full diagnose on the car to find what triggered the problem. And i'm told this includes them examining the wires in the center console.
I'm worried that if they find that I tampered with the wiring, they will void my warranty.

Maybe ill have to dish out money and go to an independent shop

I would do an attempt of disconnecting the (-) post of the battery for the whole night and maybe (just maybe) the error code will reset.
