traffic information

Do you need to subscribe to a satellite radio or anything to get real time traffic information on your navigation? i was looking forward to this feature, but after driving my moms g35 the other day and noticing you need XM traffic or something for it to work, i wasn't sure if additional subscriptions were required for my bmw (which arrives next week).

The RTT information the BMW picks up is over FM. I think Clear Channel broadcasts this information on its channels. And they own channels all over the place. I'm in San Diego and I think my radio recognizes 3 local RTT stations!

I do not have any satellite radio system installed.

No, the subscription to RTTI is included in the price of Navi. Just sit back and enjoy!

No subscription needed. It's a great feature, especially if you live in an urban area, where is seems the info is more accurate. Also very nice that you can access the traffic info regardless of whether or not you are using navi guidance.

My Traffic data was working fine, then suddenly it wasn't. A minor gotcha here: if you go screwing around in the settings, you can turn off the radio reception for the Traffic data. Unfortunately, due to bad UI design, when you then select the "show traffic data" from Navigation, it says something to the effect of "No reception". This led me to believe that either the data was no longer being broadcast (for whatever reason), or my unit was broken. Ideally, it should have said something like "Feature disabled" to clue me in that I'm an idiot and "broke" it myself

As I recall, the menu to reenable Traffic reception was on the second page of the Settings screen, so it didn't exactly jump out at me either when I was searching around for something I might have screwed up.
