Strange concept

I was just thinking . . with the synthetic oil change interval and the 140 treadwear Potenzas, there's a good chance I will be changing oil and tires at the same time. (ok, actually I changed my oil at 7,800 miles) but you get the idea.

^ Treadwear numbers are really only accurate within the same brand, but a tire with at 300 rating would essentially last twice as long as a 140 before needing replacement for tread wear. You should check out the tire section or go to tire rack for more good info on that.

treadwear rating at 140 should last you around 20K miles under normal driving conditions... ie: driving like an elderly woman.

140 means different things to different manufacturers

you could easily burn through them in less than 12000 miles if you drive aggressively

Neither. It is comparison between the tire in question and the benchmark tire from the same manufacturer under the same load, inflation pressure, same vehicle, same roadway, same temperature, etc., etc.

I am amazed at the reasoning for not following what BMW tells you to do concerning the oil. When the car needs new oil it will tell you, until then don't waste your time or money. Your car will be just fine. I have had 3 bimmers and have always followed the normal procedure and I have never had one single problem.
