Question about tire wear

I have an 06' 330 with 162's and run flats with 27,000 miles. I took a look under the car the other day and the inside of the rear tires are completely worn while the outside have plenty of wear remaining. There is obviously too much negative camber built into the suspension. Since the camber is set at the factory (car has never been damaged), should BMW be partially responsible for the replacement of the tires or am I lucky to get 27,000 miles out of these tires? Thanks

I think for performance tires and such a low treadwear rating (140), the wear is actually pretty good. I have about 20K miles on mine with probably another 7-10k miles to go). I had prepared myself for replacing the tires every 12k miles prior to purchasing this car, so I am pleasantly surprised.

The alignment does cause the inside of the rear tires to wear faster, but this seems to be the case with many performance cars. From what I have seen Porsche's have the same problem, if not worse. Have you noticed similar wear on your 993TT?

without that negative camber, the car wouldn't handle as well as it does

27K is good mileage for sport pack tires

good handling comes at the expense of tire life

I have had every 3 series dating back to a 320i in the early 80's and I have never had uneven wear on the rears. Oh well, if they are at the end of their life, so be it. As far as my 993TT goes, it is a 600hp car and I would be lucky to get 5000 miles on the rears. That is a different story though. Thanks

as the cars get heavier, they have to make the suspension more agressive to retain handling prowess...

I don't have access to alignment specs, but I'd wager there's more rear negative camber stock on the E9X than there was on say the E30 or E21

This may be off topic, but you should post some pics of the 993. They are amazing cars and it sounds like yours is an incredible machine!

damn I have 12000miles on mine and the tires are almost done...i think it's because my 325 came with the crappy tires before the changed them to whatever they are now....

+1

The suspension was dialed to excel in handling, thus the need for negative camber. If you attemt to align the vehicle again, you will realize that the specified range for your car will be negative.

27K is excellent for a car of this caliber in addition to the wheel/tire size.

I too love the the 993. One of my favorite cars of all time.

Thanks for all the replies. Here are a couple of pics of my 993's. The red C4S has been sold and the silver 993TT is my current toy.

The Porsches are SCARY. I took our 996tt Cab. in for servicing at the beginning of the summer. They called me and said it was dangerous to drive home because the tires were down the cord. Earlier that week I had gotten under the car and looked and the tires appeared to be perfect! Turns out as soon as the car was put on the lift you could see where the camber had previously disguised. Be careful!

I've seen your Silver TT on 6speed... it's in my top 5 fav. Porsches EVER (your particular car).

Thanks Joey, amazing how many people are on all the different car forums. For 993's, Rennlist is the best . Good luck with the turbo cab, they are very nice cars.

I agree, there is a definitely a more aggressive "slant" to the E90 rear tires when compared with previous gens. This will contribute to faster tire wear.

To the OP, go with a tire with higher treadwear rating if you are concerned with tire life.

Check the rear toe as well, as improper toe eats away at tires more than neg. camber does.
