Sydney trip

Merry Xmas Australians! It's been pretty quiet on the forums, so I thought it will be a good review on my drive to Sydney.

It's the first time taking my F30 up to Sydney from Melbourne just to finish breaking in the car and for a short getaway.

The ride took bout 10 hours , man the road was rough on the msports suspensions. The uneven roads where annoying. I have nvr driven such a long distance on sports suspensions. An advice for guys who do a lot of interstate driving , adaptive suspension is a definite must. I did quite a few sprints from 100 to 180 to test out the torque it was surprisingly better than expected. Thinking back when I was considering the 335 and M3, I'm relieved that I got the 328 as the 110 speed limits are a pain in the ass. I wonder if I could ever utilize the power.

I will definitely ponder again when the 4 series is out, time will tell. Perhaps 335 535 or M owners can provide some feedback here ..Fuel consumption was surprisingly good driving with a mix of sports and comfort averaging at 6.9l/100..

As I reached Sydney I was tailed by 2 e90 owners trying to make out my car lol probably not too many f30 m sports on the road yet. I got a thumbs up as one passed me.. I indicated to him that he should get one by pointing at my vehicle and pointing back at the driver. He loved the gesture from his facial expression lol

how can you even try to substantiate a 4 cyc over the M3 or the inline 6 335? speed limit of 110km in the context of the audio sensation experienced to get there and the throttle response 335i and M3>328i by a long mile.

Not Melbourne to Sydney, but thus far, my longest trip was to Mornington (& back of course) on Xmas day via Monash Fwy & Eastlink. Sitting on 100km/h is a JOKE in the 328i. Feels like 60km/h. Actually, for many cars, 100km/h is a joke on Eastlink. What a good road till it narrows to meet the Frankston Fwy. Still ok, but the soon to be open fwy extension will be a welcome infrastructure for many.

Anyway, earlier this year I took my E90 to Albury & back via back roads in 42 degree heat without issue on the very hard sports suspension. Thinking about the F30's sports suspension in comparison, I would be floating. I'm surprised you had a hard time with your sports suspension J1n. I'm off to Echuca soon. Roads won't be anywhere near as nice as Eastlink. I will report back on suspension then, but I expect it to be very positive after living with the E90's suspension for 7 years. Not complaining about it at all by the way.

I'm just weighing benefits of the additional cost incurred against usability. If the M was just 20k extra like in the states it would be a no brainer but sadly for us it's tax on top of tax. 335 would be the sweet spot for us I reckon.

I reckon the 328i is the sweet spot with it's higher LCT threshold.

Had a tuned N54 previously and while the power was nice, I don't miss it unless I'm on the straight of a track.

M cars are for track nuts, it's the only time you really need a proper slippery diff. Or bigger wallets than mine.

We also drove up our new F30 328i to Sydney to finish up the break in period, and then onwards to Port Macquarie over the Christmas break. Suspension was a bit rough over the older bits of road - so yeah, revalidating what J1n said, consider adaptive suspension if you plan on long/interstate drives.

Engine was under 2k rpm when cruising at 110, which meant plenty more power at hand for overtaking.

We were on eco most of the time. We probably could've made Melbourne to Sydney in one tank (didn't actually try this out, we refuelled just before metropolitan Sydney).
The drive back was about 13 hours, 1200km and averaged 6.1/100km.

Yes I agree with you. especially given how the F30 335i is substantially cheaper than the last E90 335i, if my memory serves me right.
