2. They usually drive mechanically aggressive and not caring about the future fate of the car as they will usually turn the car back in, in about 2 years.

3. You will never know if the former owner leased the vehicle.

So basically it comes down to luck of the draw for pre owned car buyers.

All I know if I was a leaser which I probably will never be. I will treat the car as it is my own. Change oil every 3,000 with top of the line oil (Royal Purple), drive mechanically safe most of the time and give the car some respect. So that the next owner may have an easier time.

My CA today was telling me how alot of the cars are leased from BMW. Alot more than other manufacturers. In the USA that is.

People lease their cars for different reasons (including using them as business write-offs to save tax) and some do look after theirs well, so please don't paint everybody with the same brush! Besides, BMW did not specify the 25,000km (+/- computer calculated adjustment) oil change interval by throwing darts at a chart.

No im just bringing up a point. People that lease there cars need to take care of them too.

Along with that my CA said that people that lease usually only change there oil every 15000-20000 miles. Now if you got a pre owned BMW would you have wanted it maintained that way?

Im one of those so the next guy or girl to buy my car has nothing to worry about. I adore all my cars and i treat them all like treasures. Alot of people call me crazy but i take pride in all the cars that are mine.

I think the answer is simple, buy new. What someone does on their lease cannot possibly affect you. It's not material what people are doing with leased vehicles, those belong to BMWFS, not the OP or the people who are driving them. BMWFS should be the ones who are concerned one way or another....

Let's face if you like getting a new car every 3 years leasing makes pretty good sense. My wife's car is leased, she drives it like a grandma most of the time and I take care of like it was my own.

I like how you say "luck of the draw for pre-owned buyers" as if buying a used car is anything but in any other situation. You can look at the car and tell if it's been taken care or had a hard life just like you could if you were buying from an individual.

This seems like a trivial and silly thing to get annoyed about. If it is something you are personally concerned about, then just buy new and the problem is solved. The fact of the matter is if you buy a used car, you never really know what you're getting unless you buy it from someone you know. That shiny used car sitting on the dealer's lot may have passed all of the testing and inspections, but it might have been ragged out by the previous owner as well. Lease or no lease, it doesn't make a difference.

I think you're suggesting people who lease treat their cars like rentals, by just dogging it out almost for sport. I don't really think that's the case. There are people out there who will not change the oil within even the factory specs, people who take their cars to the track, people slam on the brakes all of the time, etc... all of these things are possible in any used car (CPO's included).

And just as a side note, leasing can easily be the smartest idea for some people, but that doesn't mean they don't love cars or treat them well. I'm a huge car fan, keeping the engine bay clean enough to eat off of, keeping the interior and paint looking nice, doing all the service at or ahead of schedule, etc. I've always bought my cars as well, but I'm thinking I might lease for the first time with the car I've ordered, and I don't plan on treating it any differently than if I had financed it.

OK, I'm sure they will take care of their cars now that you say they should.

A lot of people who buy BMW's new feel BMW knows best and will follow the BMW maintenance schedule (15K-20K) as well. Not everyone who buys a BMW is an enthusiast.

Why do you think that people who lease their car automatically beat the snot out of them and don't care of them? I realize it isn't the same as owning the vehicle but, it's not like having a rental car for the week end either.

BMWFS and all the other leasing cos. are business people, and so there has to be some sort of check and balance for them to protect their interests and property. The fact that the vehicles are inspected upon return, and serious charges are written into the agreement for overages, damage, etc., is an incentive for the lessee not beat the daylights out of the vehicle in any way detectable. Unfortunately, it's human nature to treat something owned and rented differently.

So, I'm leasing mine. I'm going to change the oil when the oil indicator system tells me to. I'm going to drive it like it was designed to be driven. I'm going to service it regularly, and even turn it back in with brand new tires (I'm not going to use the 18" RFTs).

I'd be happy to buy a BMW that has a full BMW service history, is in good mechanical condition (always worth an inspection - when I traded in my X5, it urgently needed new CV joints!), and doesn't stink of smoke inside.

I don't understand the US "oil change every 20 minutes" obsession. Change it when the manufacturer recommends, with the recommended oil.....

The funny thing is that in most cases, leasing is almost exactly the same as financing b/c most people get a 48 or 60 month loan and get rid of their cars before they've made the final payment. People in that situation don't "own" their cars any more than people who are leasing do.

Since I only seem to keep a car about 3 years, as I said in a previous post, I'm leaning towards leasing myself.

My wifes car is the first one we've leased and it doesn't feel any less our car than ones we've owned. I think a lot of people feel that way.
