normal tyres?

i know i havent even got my car yet (tomorrow though cant wait) but if i were to change the wheels and put normal tyres on as opposed to RFT would i need to stiffen the suspension up, ihave heard that BMW have made the ride softer to compensate for the harder RFT

any ideas?

I put some 19" non rft on last week and its transformed the ride quality, smoothness, handling, lightness of steering with better feel. I really am shocked how much better they ride compared to 17" Runfarts.
I really do not understand why BMW is still pursuing this avenue

Oh man..

That means I have to spend some 4-5k euros on some good 18" rims and tyres..

I have 2 kerbed wheels and I am tempted to just keep them this way till the tyres wear down and then get 19" non-rft.

Guys .. don't get carried away.

I've done 20K miles in my 330i on 18 inch runflats and they are absolutely fine.

I was all set to hate them and put proper tyres on the car .. but actually ... you really can't tell.

There is a massive difference, especially in the winter, when the RFT's can't get enough heat in the sidewalls......A major safety issue in cold conditions, and increased cornering speed/confidence/comfort with non RFT's.

They made the suspension a little too soft because of the shitty runflats.When you change to regular tires I think it got worse.

My M Sport has a stiff enough suspension and around town it can get crashy and not as controlled as the slightly softer setup my Mazda6 MPS had... that had All wheel drive, but this car in the wet and in cold conditions can get sideways very easily without much provication, though the traction control does kick in and sort it out.

I also think the rate my tyres will last and cost of change, I might as well just get non-rft and upgrade to decent OEM 19" wheels.

I hear what you say .. and I expected to really struggle with the RFT's on my 330i. I had non RFT 19 inch tyres on my e60 and other e60 drivers hated the rft's.

However, I don't find them a problem at all.

There's tonnes of grip and excellent feedback.

I'm also fine for wear .. about half worn and 20K miles down.

No problems with my 18" runflats and a lovely ride too. My Michelins are probably one of the best tyres I've had for grip. And they've done 4 laps of the Nordscheilfe!!

well thanks for that, some say yes, some no and not much info on whether the suspension needs changing, i guess ill have to drive it for a while to see, but on the test drive it felt more twitchy than i am used to in a car, and please dont say oh its the car and the wheels are going to fall off etc etc... but i guess if they do at least they wont fall off with punctures

I'm not saying the handling isn't better .. as you say I haven't tried it so I really don't know.

What I am saying is that the handling with the RFT's is superb and I don't feel that they impede the handling characteristics of the car in any way.

As EVO magazine say in this article the e90 leads it's class dynamically WITH runflats:

I agree. I doubted runflats but was pleasantly surprised with the E90

The bigger issue with the e90 and other current generation BMW's is the way in which the suspension becomes unsettled over uneven surfaces.

This was a problem to some extent on the e46, but it is worse on the e90 and worse again on the 1 series.

Lot's of reviews point to difficulty in getting the power down on uneven roads, due to a combination of the suspension and the DSC+ systems engine intervention.

I'm pretty sure you are right ... the M5 and and z4m also ditch the runflats.

For out an out performance the extra unsprung weight isn't really acceptable.

It also looks like they have reworked the suspension, so that will cloud the issue somewhat.
