how accurate is traffic
hey guys,
I frequently make trips between NYC and Baltimore. As most of you know, that drive is terrible on Sunday evening/afternoons. So, my first time in my e92, the GPS voice tells me to detour. I eventually end up around Philly and back in B-more in the normal 3 hr time. I never sat in traffic and cruised the whole way home. My question is, how accurate is the traffic? I ask this because as I neared Philly it wanted me to exit 95 onto rt 76 or something. I just kept going and found no traffic disturbance. Bottom line, I'm really happy but wondering if it would have been ok to continue down the NH turnpike (but I'll never know). oh, another thing. Was at a new restaurant last week and let the valet park my car. He returned my car with the overpowering smell of clutch. I called the company and they are going to pay for any repairs needed. The dealer is going to replace the clutch today, just to be safe. The same valet burned out the clutch in my friends TL... cost= 2300. Thanks for reading. |

BTW, the rule of thumb is that everytime someone vallet's a performance car, a baby bunny is sacrificed to the demonic gods of property abuse. Don't kill those bunnies! |

Letting a valet boy drive your car is like letting your GF go out with your frat bro man... she's fucked.

In the UK the TMC traffic is very good and accurate. Though that doesn't help answer your question for the US!!

The traffic is only as good as how often the broadcasters update.

Tip the valet guy before you drop it off.

I found the traffic info in my Nav to be a little old... by a good 1 hour or so I'd say. It wanted me to detour but I kept going... I hit no traffic.

+1 - The data is the same as the radio stations get to broadcast. So it is accurate to a point. It has gotten me through LA pretty quick several times. I'm pretty happy with it. Seems that just about every time I ignore it I end up sitting in traffic somewhere.

Driving from Massachusetts to Va. last Saturday, the traffic alert came on several times. I ignored the first three. No problem with the first two but the third alert was for real. I got off 95 as soon as possible and went around it.
A fourth alert came on in New Jersey but it was much too late. I did get off the turnpike and drove down a side road to the next entrance and bypassed a major traffic back-up. It seems hit or miss to me. |

In Pittsburgh, I've found it to be very accurate on roads where there are electronic sensors. There might be a slight delay until it is updated like 5-10 minutes. On the roads where there are no sensors, the information is not present. So basically, the NAV has routed me right into more traffic than if I just stayed my course. I'm still learning how the system reacts--if it tells me not to exit, that might be the best way. (Versus not knowing if exiting is best)
