F30 335i Chargepipe blown w/ stage 1
There's been a report on n54tech forum that a guy has blown his chargepipe with just a stage 1 tune. I asked for more details and will update here when I hear back.

Just curious, but why would they be talking about an N55-engined car on an N54 forum?

The site was created before the N55 was ever conceived, lol. Now they cover most late model BMW engines.

Apparently this is a common occurrence and can even happen to stock engines. Hopefully BMS will develop a metal chargepipe for our F30's soon.

this happened to me with my GTI after i got it tuned. I thought it was something more serious since all power was gone and each time the turbo went on you just heard a loud air "whooshing" sound... but the dealer just replaced it and it never happened again

Owners details: "Thanks for the comments. Engine was at 120C (248F), ambient was 28C (82.4F). I was driving for about 1 hour at 90mph when it happened, I was doing a hard acceleration for a overtake and it cracked at the joint to the engine right at about 4500 rpm."

Sounds more like a defective part on one car, not something symptomatic of the model.

Apparently the stock charge pipe is pretty flimsy. They fail a fair amount (from what I've heard) in stock or modded form. One of the first upgrades a lot of people do is the CP solely because aftermarket is better built even if the performance gain is negligible.

Terry just commented they'd have one out at some point, which basically confirms the existing N55 chargepipe will not fit the F30's.

Question is... you've now replaced the chargepipe - what is the next weakest link?

Is there an update on aftermarket cp's for a F30 N55? My car is completely stock, and the cp still blew, with less than 1k miles and never saw full throttle.

Curious how the cost of an aftermarket charge pipe compares to a stock replacement from the dealership...I bet they aren't too far off from one another.

a "Drivetrain problem" message appears on the screen with an advice to "Drive at moderate speeds"
You lose all boost and the engine feels NA. Because the turbos are still spooling, the engine sometimes stutter when you accelerate. Typically not more than 10% throttle acceleration before you feel the jerk/coughing. Feels like a 30.6hp car. |

Yes, the MAF will still register all of the air being drawn into the turbocharger, but little of it is actually making it to the cylinders, and the map sensor near the throttle is reporting very low boost(depends on size of leak). This will confound the ECU, since a lot of air is being registered as flowing into the engine, but its not actually making it there, so the air/fuel mixture cannot be accurately maintained. Hence, the vehicle is still drivable under low load, but likely nothing else.
