So are our brakes still squeaking and what are we doing about it?

I got a smile and brush off, with instructions not to baby the car and stomp on the breaks for a few hundred to "bed them" (the words these wrenches use...!).

Anyway, the damn things squeak like an '83 Sentra and its embarrassing so its going back. Mine have to warm up for a few miles to get musical but once they do they blow hard.

What's your experience?

Came from the dealer a few days ago and they couldn't duplicate it most likely cause they where doing hard stops. But its only on slow light braking and it happens 100% of the time.

I had this issue for the first 2000 miles, and had to take mine in twice. The first time, I got the brush off from service who "couldn't reproduce." The brakes, of course, squealed like a banshee as I pulled out of the dealer lot. Bedding the brakes would solve my problem for a short period, but squealing would eventually reappear within several hundred miles of driving. So I then started documenting the issue with my iPhone video, and marched back to service a few weeks later with dozens of videos of the problem. They chamfered something, and the problem went away for 150 miles, reappeared with a vengeance for 50-100 miles, and now appears to be resolved. My brakes are silent most of the time, although I do occasionally get a brief squeal the first time I lightly apply the brakes when car has been sitting outside all day (0-15F).
So the squeal (which was absolutely ruining my enjoyment of the car) has almost completely subsided after the brakes were chamfered and a few hundred miles were put on the car. I'd recommend that you document the issue with your phone's video camera and bring a bunch of clips to service. Video doesn't lie, and it prevents service from denying/ignoring the issue.

The thing is the brakes are already chamfered as i took them apart and tried to grease the shims to see if it will help, maybe they just sanded down even more and took the glaze off. Im going to try it 1 more time when im not lazy.

My brake noise went away (mostly) after 700 miles. If I were BMW, I would ignore us. let me know when your HPFP fails, or the sunroof explodes. Then you'll have my attention.

It's a new car. Let it break in for a couple thousand miles.

Mine just started squeaking today (900 mi). It would only do it sometime but i'm guessing it's going to get worse as i add more miles? I'm going to try cleaning the brakes before i bring it in to the dealership.

After about 1000 miles, I bed my brakes and they haven't really squealed much lately.

i am at 1200 miles and the squealing seems worse. It is the weirdest sound to me. not grinding. it is almost like the breaks are whining. i have heard the breaks even make the noise and oscillate aka the sound was some issue on the rotor because it was coming in and out of volume.

I am trying to be patient but it is embarrassing. I have tried bedding, it worked for a few hundred miles as stated above. I am giving the issue till 3000 miles before I take it in. I have heard mine make the sound slightly even at speeds of 23 mph.

The dealership wrote down that the pads are 100%, the squeaky brake complaint is actually the sound of the turbo blow off, and that they couldn't reproduce it.

The squeaking was gone for a day, maybe because of the weather change, but now it's back even worse.

My car is a head turner because of squeaky brakes.

I don’t know why I didn’t realize this.. but I let my dad hear the squeaking and he knew the issue right away. The break pad material is harder than the rotor material. I trust his judgement he has been in the mechanic world for 30+ years.

I am either going to change the brake pads out myself for something less “performance” oriented or ask the dealer switch them to non m-sport pads. See if it makes a difference.

Smart Dad BMWforLife.

These calipers look just like the akebono's on my G37s, and they made the same noise until I put on semi metalic.

yeah, I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me before, we had this issue once before. I am going to change it asap. I will report back if it fixes it.

It's messed up that to fix this we need to do it our self. My car has 1200 miles on it.

I guess $60 for pads and to keep BMW service dept from putting another scratch on the car is worth it.

No, you have to bed the pads in. Nothing wrong with the sports pad material fitted to a sporty brand car.

Don't bed them in, and bother to keep them conditioned = glazed pads which makes them squeal and lose bite.

I had this same problem from the day i bought the car with 5 miles on it. The sales man told me it would go away. 2,000 miles later i couldn't take it anymore. Brought it to the dealership and they took the car for a spin, said it sounds horrible and they were glazed. They called BMW and had new pads overnighted. I have not heard a single squeak/squeal/grind/screech or any other sound it was making since

well i dont have the horrible squeak on mine yet, the only sound i do hear is at the very last second or two before I come to a complete stop, theres a squeal, it doesnt happen when I start braking, only when the car is about to fully stop.

^ That is the sound everyone is talking about. It's the annoying squeak as your coming to a slow stop. Got about 2000 miles on mine and it's still doing it except when it rains (guess it coats the rotors or something). I have US Spec car in Italy and the dealership here was pretty cool, ordered new pads on the spot...I hope it fixes it the prob but who knows as the next pads could do it too.

the squeaks could be from couple diff sources. 1: vibration between the pad and the shim. 2: type of pads (i.e track pads) 3: not properly bedded in pads on the new rotor. 4: rare, but i've had defective pads with slightly smaller size causing vibrations within the caliper.
most of the time when squeaks during light pressure is caused from the shim vs. pad vibration (hense the reason why it doesn't squeal when you press hard due to pressure the pistons are putting onto the shims). try to clean it up and re-greese.. see if it cures it.

I have 7k miles and it still squeaks like it did on day 1. I took it to the dealer a few months ago and they said they couldn't reproduce it, but "degalzed" them anyway. Squeak went away.....for about a week.

How do I properly "bed" the brakes? It's so embarrassing when I back out of the driveway that I wait until nobody's around before leaving. This coupled with the whistling sound at 60+ mph makes me wonder why I spent so much $$$ on this car.
