Unhappy Akra EVO & Colorado Emissions

Here's a bit of info for anyone in CO that's considering adding a full exhaust setup like the Akra Evo.

I headed in for an emissions test today (apparently I did not pass the more stringent automated roadside test we have here). While I didn't expect to pass, I thought it would give me an idea of how far off I was and if some kind of tune could help get me over the hump. To my surprise, the actual emissions from the car with a stock tune are under (some numbers just barely) the CO state limits. No readiness issues either. Hooray!...well, almost.

Unfortunately the visual inspection is what got me, as they noticed I was clearly missing 2 out of the 4 cats.

Pretty bummed, as it looks like it's back to the stock exhaust for now.

I have the Evo as well, and no issues since the springs doesn't have emissions testing.

Interesting...I had no idea you guys were exempt.

Maybe it's time to make the move down south.

Just swap back and your good for another couple years. Too much of a PITA?

Yeah, it is pain. If it was just an axle back it would be easy, but that mid-pipe is difficult and expensive to swap out. That and the principle of the whole thing just bothers me.

Essentially they've said "You passed the test but you're missing the equipment that we think you'll need to pass the test so we're failing you."

This post was mainly just meant to be a heads up for anyone considering a new exhaust as every state has different laws and limits, and I wasn't able to find any M3 specific info for CO.

How have you been liking your EVO by the way?

Loving it. They're supposedly kicking around a proposal to get rid of physical inspection/testing in Colo, hope that gets passed (assume not...)

Yeah. My take is that who cares if you have 4 cats or some magic elf under the car converting CO to CO2...as long as you're below the levels they've set that's all that should really matter.

Anyways, I think I may have found a workaround for keeping the EVO on the car for now...but I should know for sure in the next week or two.

No go on the appeal, unfortunately. Even though it passes the sniffer, their head emissions guy said 'that Chinese exhaust is illegal for sale in the US'.

Back to stock for now...

Switched to a Dinan axle-back and the Akra is now up for sale!

Me too. The Dinan is nice, but it's no EVO.
