Why did YOU chose 335d over 335i
Were you that bothered about fuel consumption??
are you not the sort of guy who really enjoys thrashin a car?? i mean i hammer the 335d, and enjoy doing so as it is a fast car.. but im trying to get into the mind of the 335d owner? are they less of a hooligan that a 335i owner. I didnt choose what i had, my father did when i found out i was pissed off but now ive succumb to its massive wave of torque and am in love with her Carlos

Carlos, my decision was relatively straightforward, based on running costs (VED band G on the 335i (and punative extra tax that it brings), fuel consumption) and the better residuals likely from the 'd'. However, the 335i was the first car I drove back in June (in E93 form) and I was totally hooked by the performance and engine sound. I came very very close to ordering over the 'd' but common sense prevailed when the dealer took me out in an E90 335d. All it really 'lacks' over the 'i' is the engine sound in my eyes.
I am not a 'fast' driver and I cannot tell the difference in a difference of 1 or 2 secs 0-60 to be honest, so it made sense to go with the 'd'. The advice and comments off this site also helped me make up my mind. What I will say is that if I were ordering right now the decision would be much much harder now that the 335i has dropped a VED band and is slightly more economical. I am/was very nervous about where this Govt are going with the VED banding, a hike to £400 for band G next year could lead to more, I think that could do some damage to certain cars in that band. |

pretty much the same reasons as PeterG mentioned plus always wanted to try a modern 6 cylinder torquetastic motor. I do approx 450 miles a week commuting so MPG was certainly a factor
I nearly bought a 170BHP A3 sportback..until I heard that engine in a mates golf. Sounded like a tractor.

Proposed congestion charge.
I am in London most days, and the thought of giving that little shithead £25 a day, was not acceptable. Even though i get it back, its the principle. As for ragging, yes i do rag it, most of the time. I had a 130 before, and the 'd' is quicker, and an M5 before that, and the 'd' is still quicker in everyday situations. As said, the only thing missing, is the engine note, so i just turn up the stereo. Getting 3-400 miles from a tank helps, as i could only get 200 from the 130, and 8-10mpg from the M5 |

I got the d because:
i) I would've had to wait months longer for the i (primary reason) ii) I was tempted by automatic so it seemed a sensible combination iii) The lower tax and better fuel consumpton appealed to me but I struggle to believe anyone who can afford a 35-40k car will struggle too much with a bit extra tax and/or fuel consumption. iv) Never had a diesel/automatic and I liked the idea of trying out this new breed of performance diesels. I have to say, I'm not sure I'm a long term big fan of automatic having lived with it for a while - it is ok when I can't be bothered but I don't like the lack of control - I think the diesel may add to that...sometimes it just makes a noise (revving before it changes gear) when accelerating at low speeds and I'm thinking...what's all that racket about !? I'm glad I did, and when I do do some miles I appreciate not having to go to the pump so often. I do miss the control and engine note of manual, but I do like the oomph of the diesel. I guess that's the torque.

If I had the money, I'm pretty sure I'd go for the 335d

As I'm old now and having had a succession of high reving motors, 323i, several 325is, 328i (OK not so high revinng) and M3 as well as motors from other manufacturers including Rover and Honda, I'd just had enough of screwing the nads of an engine to make it go. Had a couple of diesels also as company cars and they were crap so was never a fan of oil burners until I drove a 330d. Been converted ever since and now on our fourth and fifth BM diesels. The performance is always available and the cars so easy to drive without any drama or attracting attention. Fuel consumption is important as well as the M3 was averaging 18MPG and the 330d 27MPG on the same journeys (the M3s clutch also went up and down around 130 times in the same 4 and 1/2 miles). Driving the new M3 next week, which I'm sure will be fantastic, but not sure I'll tempted.
Regards Chris

I chose the 335d because I had the 3 litre diesel engine in my 530d and it was great, so getting a 535d or 335d was the next step up. It is a superb engine, without a doubt - after the remap I've got 300+ bhp available but I'm still averaging around 38 mpg so get close to 500 miles between tankfuls. Since I do nearly 20k miles a year, that is important to me, largely for the convenience.
My only niggles are the damn noisy/rock-hard runflat tyres (lack of space for a spare prevents me from getting rid of them), and every now and again I wish I had a manual transmission to allow me to *really* enjoy driving the car. I've promised myself that my next car won't be another auto, nor have run-flats - that's going to be a challenge.

roofer mate what m5 did you have e39?? i have chased one to approx the ton and was nothing in it, after re-map i rekon i could pull past one. totally opposite to when i came across the MAC DADDY m5 the e60 v10 MAN THAT WAS FAST:rocks: thanks for the replies everybody i didnt chose or spec the car i am using, my father did the lot.. but he did a good job, lovely colour with complimenting interior, and the BEST WHEELS for an e92, if i may say so myself:rocks: i do not know the ''real'' resasons behind his choice of 335d, i can only think its because of the consumption and the fact he had a 535d before hand, but she was sadly stolen, well car jacked i personally would have chosen the 335i, but now i think the 335d is amazing.. so quick in gear... and from a standing start i at santa pod have beaten m3's m3 CSL's etc... pretty impressive really just need to get on with the re-map now and most prob will be with CAA:rocks: (nicks influence) only car i have come across so far thats WHOOPED ME and i mean WHOOPED is the e60 m5 man i will have one of those in a few years, or even sooner as my old man keeps goin on about getting one getting the m3 for few nights next week, cant wait Carlos

i agree with NFS the d makes financial sense... but if i could go back in time i'd switch and go for the 335i...
3 reasons (in this order) 1) manual 2) the sound 3) dont like the torque lower down, like to build up to it and hear a petrol engine roar |

E46 I presume?! As a test drive situation?
I'm not instigating anything... well, maybe I was instigating something by insinuating that you can't drive. But I don't mean it, you are no doubt a better (fast) driver than I am.
