Low oil?

My 335 just hit 3000 miles and today the low oil warning popped up on idrive...anyone else have this issue? My e92 would occasionally need a quart but that would be after about 10k.

This have anything to do with break in period?

I believe historically BMW has said anything better than one quart burned per 1,500 miles is within limits.

My 335 was down 1 Qt at 2300, about to be down 2 at 4500 based on taking tons of reads. From what I've seen in the forums, your car either burns oil or it doesn't. In our case we got burners.

Interested to know if the engines come from the same plant or if they build them in more than one location.

I wonder why some motors (N55's) burn oil and others don't. We have put 30k on our X3 N55 motor and it has never once dropped below the full mark within iDrive. The X3 gets driven hard too.

Would be good to know where these motors are produced and if they come from multiple locations.

Break in process maybe? Due to QC issues? I can't imagine internal tolerances come into play.

18,000mls and oil still shows max. Not 35i, but the N20 is the same apart from a 2 cylinder deficit.

Why do we have such massive inconsistencies?! I've been asking this for years and still never gotten an answer. Don't give me "it's how you drive it during break-in", give me a component or software change that has resulted from it!

Just got the low oil message yesterday. 335i with 5500 miles on it.

Better to go with Mobile1 0W-40 or Castrol 0W-30 to top off?

Better to go to the dealer who will add the quart of oil for free under warranty .

I would if I could just walk in and wait for the service. But they want you to make an appt and there is no slot available until Monday (BMW of Manhattan). Maybe I can try a different dealership I guess.

Just got the dreaded low oil warning. Now have gone through 2 quarts in 4200 miles. Disturbing part is that the 2nd quart got burned faster that the first. 1900mi vs 2300. Dealer has the car now but I'm sure I will get the story line it's within spec.

I finally added a QT of Mobil1 last night.
This is crazy to me. My N54 E60, which also has a turbo engine never needed me to add oil. And I've owned other new cars and I have never experienced it before.

BMWNA claims that it's normal and unless the N55 consumes a quart every 750 miles or less they aren't interested in hearing about it nor will they expend any energy on troubleshooting. Total BS and will ride it out to 10k to see if it improves. If not, I'll be tempted to sell and go elsewhere.

I also notice my car has a significant amount of exhaust residue on the tailpipes. For instance I'll wash the car and polish the tips...run some errands and in an hours time they are caked in black. I wonder if this has anything to do with the motor burning excessive amounts of oil. On my e92 those pipe would stay shiny for weeks after I polished them.

Mine burns oil at a good clip, 1qt every 2300 miles or so. BMW NA said they won't look at any issues unless it's 1qt every 750 miles. Total BS.

It's fascinating to track all of this...in previous turbo charged cars, I changed every 5k and never saw "oil burn"...my wife's old VW burned oil to the min levels every 2k!

With these 15k change intervals, it seems like every 6-10k before you are minimum is normal...
