Which tyres came on your car?

Hey all, I managed to really stretch the legs of the car today by driving to the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

The car handled very well in some twisty sections. Very easy to change direction and the car was grippy.

However, I've been having some issues with lots of road noise. After test driving lots of other cars recently, sad to say that it's even louder than some korean cars.

I felt that today I'm getting to the bottom of it. After experiencing lots of different road surfaces, I've put it down to the tyres. At first I thought it was wind noise, but it's actually tyre noise.

I'm wondering what everyone else had as OEM tyres. I'll start off by saying I've got the Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT 225, 55 aspect 17 inch.

I'm thinking it may also possibly be a wrong suspension component (like a bushing) that is transmitting too much road noise into the cabin?

I've got the car booked in in the meantime & will try to drive some demo F30's on the same roads where I get the noise this week.

Must say I'm a bit surprised at the level of road noise considering all the Australian reviews say the car is quiet. I'll say it can be a quiet cruiser on the right surface - but most of the time I'm driving on coarse chip. That's what they give us in Sydney.

Other than the noise, the car has been great!

You are correct about the tyre noise, however the F30 is quiet compared to the E90, when it had the first gen Pirelli run flats. The tyre noise issue has been around for 8 years when the RFTs were introduced into the E90, so it's well publicised news.

These next (2nd or even 3rd gen tyres- who can keep up) are so much better. Nowhere near conventional tyre quiet, but with these tyres and a different suspension setup, the noise is much better on most roads. This was a talking point from the motoring press, when the F30 was first road tested.

Earlier this year, I took the car from Melbourne to Echuca for a holiday (yep, myself, my wife, another couple AND my F30 went on holidays) and yes, depending on what road surface the car was travelling on, the tyre roar was non existent to fairly loud, but still nothing like the E90.

My F30 has the Bridgestones S001s as well, but 225/40/19" up front and 255/35/19" up back. For their size and aspect, they are a far cry in noise levels compared to the E90's 17" Pirellis that had somewhat higher profile, which were noisy on pretty much any road surface.

Thankfully my day to day driving is on some of Melbourne's good roads and the ride is very compliant, even with the Sports suspension. It was one of the first driving experiences I noticed. I'm very happy.

I have the staggered S001's 19" as well, and while the car isnt super quiet, i find it more due to wind noise then anything else.

Thanks for taking the time for your detailed write up david. Reinforces my view its the tyres

How does it handle coarse chip? Thinking I might ask the dealer to pick this or the Pirelli to replace my tyres

Just check mine, I'm ditto on the staggered Bridgestones S001s as well.

They are definitely quieter than the RTFs that I had on previous E92 but slightly noisier (when the cabin is dead quiet) than the non-RFTs that I swapped the previous RFTs to.

All in all, when the music is going, passengers talking and I'm cruising along... the noise really isn't that noticeable. At higher speeds, wind noise seems to be more prevalent but again nothing to really be jumping up and down about.... yet.

I'd have to back to back test to give you anything meaningful by way of feedback, it's been four years since I last used RFT's.

Oh don't worry about it. I thought you were on the stock RFT's. I didn't realise you had swapped out the tyres.

So far looks as though everyone is on the bridgestone tyres. Either that is the only tyre the rosslyn plant uses or it's the only summer tyre that BMW fit to F30s.

I am still on the stock/ OEM fitted tyres, which are a run-flat, I just haven't driven on a different RFT for that long.

I guess on reflection, tyre noise is something that hasn't crossed my mind too much - I'm either enjoying the HK sound system or listening to my exhaust burble along - so I guess it's not too much of an issue

After chucking an internal hissy fit and serious thoughts about selling my car, i think the more rational approach cost wise is to ditch my RFTs for non RFTs.

Currently doing some research and there is such a diversity of opinion out there. However, most people ditching run craps seem to be happier.

I already have a tyre repair kit. Just need to buy the compressor as i think the CO2 cannisters are dangerous to store in the boot in summer.

They must be some noisy tyres if you're considering selling you're car.

I have current gen Pirelli pzeros, and previously have had Goodyear Efficient Grip and first gen Bridgestone RE050s. None of them I would consider noisy. The Pirellis are probably the quietest of the 3 (and the best of that bunch in general).

I have the S001's that came with the 19" M Sports package and they are a bit noisy - but what I give up in quietness I gain in enjoyment driving up the mountain to home each day !!

19's are going to be noisier anyway through virtue of their lower profile.

Hey all... What a relief. I test drove a 328i with Contis and 18 inch wheels and it was night and day. Far quieter than the 17 inch bridgestones I have on my car.

The s001s have really ruined the car. I am taking it in next week for a drive with tech. What are the chances BMW will agree to changi g the tyre brand on my car? They are simply dreadful.

In the meantime, for others with a car on order I would be wary of the bridgestones.

Between zilch and zero I think. But good luck. I am happy to be proven wrong.

There is not much a dealer can do during the ordering process. The best thing you can do is ask for a swap if the car comes with the less desired tyre brand and I don't think the dealer will even bother accomodating that. Again happy to be proven wrong.
