First Attempt at Photography

So I recently purchased a new DSLR camera. It is the Sony Alpha A330. It is the first "real" camera that I have purchased so by no means is it the best. I took the following images after detailing my brothers car and mine. (Brothers-B8 A4 Mine-2011 Slightly modded E90) I edited some of the pictures after on my computer. Please let me know what you guys think of them and any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! (Criticism encouraged...I really want to get better at this!)

I used a basic editing software that was on my computer to play around with the pictures this might be making that effect. also some pictures didn't come out as crisp as others.

i haven't had much experience with cameras other than point and shoots and my smart phones... but i must say iv been having a lot of fun with this Sony. This is the first time iv picked up a DSLR and i would say its perfect for beginners. very easy to use and you start to get the hang of it real fast.

Pictures look good, but you should watch out where you increase exposure. Zoom in after you use your spot tool and try to clean up those halos. You should work on your composition some more. Look up some stuff about the rule of thirds. You'll get much nicer pictures using that. In my opinion, HDR is pretty tacky and should only be used when you're taking architecture shots to show detail to overexposed areas that are external from the building you are in. I would avoid it, but again, that's just my opinion.

Please don't do HDR, it's lame and is a crutch people use to turn boring shots into ugly boring shots.

It seems like you are serious about taking good shots, so here is some advice.

1) If you aren't already - Shoot in RAW, not JPEG.

2) Work on your framing. What jumped out at me right away is that it's hard to see what you wanted the viewer to focus on. Many of the photos have the subject too close to the edge of the photo, or cut off entirely. Many of the other photos have the subject situated right in the middle, which is awkward. Look up the rule of thirds and practice framing.

3) Try different perspectives - lower and raise the point of view to get different shots. Most of the time a car looks best when the point of view is very low. Experiment to find what perspective looks best for your cars. This goes hand in hand with framing.

Photography is just a matter of experience and practice. Just think about what you're doing and why and you will improve very quickly. Good luck!

wow really appreciate the help guys! I took your advice and started shooting in RAW file format also looked up the rule of thirds. There is a lot more to taking photos then one would imagine! all great advice and defiantly looking forward to applying it towards the shots i take. Thanks again for the feed back!
