Dealer Service
I took the 120 in for some warranty work last Friday, not to the dealer I bought the car from but my local dealer who's from the same group. The front doors were making a creaking sound, mainly when the car was cold. It seemed to stop when the car was warm. Anyway the service advisor said it was a common problem and a simple fix. I'd no reason whatsoever to doubt him.
I picked up the car up later and was given the warranty invoice (no charge of course) but was also given a work sheet. Although the car is 8K miles away from a service, they gave the car a complete visual check over including all fluids, tyre depth and pressures, brakes and underbody. Naturally the car was washed and vacuumed as well. BTW the creaks have been cured as well, adjustment of the windows and teflon tape applied where the door rubbers contact the body. Regards Chris

I believe my brother's 1 series had a similar problem. Sounds like good service to me.

Ah ha that's why they've ordered in new door seals for my car then... don't know if they're putting on the tape though. Is the tape visible (ie. will I be able to tell if it's been done?)

Hi you say its transparent, but I have seen silver and blue cars with black tape on them, which looks nasty. My M sport is black, so you dont see it.

Guys, for info, I've just sold my 120d sport that had the same problem. Never got to replacing the seals or applying the tape (both have had mixed levels of success in curing the problem). There is no official cure and people who have had the seals replaced have got the prob back a few months down the line. The only way to really do it that I and others found worked was to clean the paint inside the door aperture and polish it, and then clean and treat the rubber on the door seals (the ones that run along the top of the door and sit against the paintwork of the body in the door aperture).
The general concensus is, though, don't use any silicone products whatsoever. Once you get it into the rubber seals it wil make things worse and it's a t**t to get rid of permanently. If you get the paint nice and smooth-feeling the problem will go away. Mine was worse when the car was warm (from sunlight) and best when it rained. I did the polish job and it lasted for 3 months without another application (using Zymol) but you will periodically have to re-do it. See here for the fix (bit of a marathon but worth it): http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4460 And some early opinion on the tape fix: http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7442 http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7217 |
