iPhone 5 Cradle Availability [Updated 04/09/13]

Currently, the iPhone 5 cradle [more details] cannot be ordered by US dealers. The part number 84212338568 has been "frozen."

The part will become available on April 9, 2013. However, it will still need to ship from Germany at that point.

Per BMW, the ETA for the iPhone 5 cradle is still June.

UPDATE:

This was a bulletin released by BMW on April 3, 2013:

I'm merely disseminating information that was provided to me.

I don't have an iPhone 5.

Jail? What's the downside to the cradle? I'm tired of the usb connector flopping around.

The main problem is that it takes over your main screen with the proprietary apple-looking interface. With the USB connection, you can split the front screen and see other things, like NAV, radio/entertainment info while vewing BMW Apps, etc.

Besides simplicity, the only advantage the adaptor provides is greater reception, as it ties the phone to the shark tail external anntenna.

Really? With the USB cable, the screen can look just as it does if the phone is connecting with Bluetooth, or when the phone is not there. Can't one get the full-screen nav, for example, with the phone in the cradle?

It does nothing of the kind, with a phone in a cradle it is accessible using the normal iDrive media controls just like a USB device. If you have BMW Apps you can use the "iPod Out" UI, but I'm not sure this will work on the iPhone 5 though.

I am not sure what you mean by nothing of the kind. There are numerous threads on this forum that say that while you use the cradle (i.e., plugin), you cannot split the screen, meaning that the only thing you can see is the iPod interface. Of course, if you steer away from the iPod interface in iDrive, you may be able to access other features of iDrive. However, if you have the iPod interface on the screen, that all that you are going to see.

If you mean that you can use the cradle like a USB connection to access the BMW Apps, then you are paying $250 ($500 for the iPhone 5 cradle) for the antenna enhancement. You cannot get video throught he USB connection.

$500? Who cares the car is over $40,000.00 and if you are using the Nav you don't need another screen. I like it because I have a place where my phone is in place, not moving around getting scratch. Also if its in the dock I don't play with it and I do what I need to do, which is to drive.

Garage List
In the item compatibility listing, the F3X 3 series is not listed. I'm assuming it's an oversight as it's about the only new model that is not listed, but can anyone confirm compatibility?

Unlike previous media adapters, this one doesn't. Seems very bizarre.

Walked to the parts counter and asked!, I can confirm all functions work on my 1M and was told the dealer tested it on a F30 335 and was also working. They told me they were not successful on the new 6 series... So if you get it, it might not work depending on your model.
I had to do a Software updated through USB to access all the features.
Honestly I don't see the benefit of this cradle compared if you plug your Iphone 5 directly with the Apple cable instead... I guess it looks better...

You don't want this cradle. It doesn't do anything and it traps your phone in the armrest.

Except rapid charge and improve reception (which is what I need where I live).
