Switzer tune for M5 - $7,000 US

Switzer Performance has launched an upgrade kit for the BMW M5 (F10) available for 6,995 USD.

The tuner has taken a break from its aftermarket programs for the Nissan GT-R and various Porsche models to focus on the German high-performance sedan. The car's soundtrack has been improved thanks to a new high-performance, stainless steel exhaust system.

It also features high-flow drop-in air filters and a removable engine control module working together with the stock systems for a higher boost from the engine's twin turbos. While the standard BMW M5's V8 4.4-liter twin-turbo produces 560 HP (412 kW) and 502 lb-ft (680 Nm), the version modified by Switzer churns 700 HP (515 kW) and 640 lb-ft (867 Nm).

The tuner has also announced starting this summer they will offer carbon-nano brake pads and Signature alloys for all 2013MY (and later) M5s.

Actually bro, not to argue with you or anything, but just to make a friendly counter-point, $7,000 isn't a bad deal for an undisputable 700hp. If they provide dyno-charts, vbox runs, or drag strip times to back up their package then this sounds like a good deal considering an Akropovic exhaust alone costs $8,000 for a whopping gain of 10hp or a Gruppe M intake costs $3,500 for a gain of 15hp which is the same as removing the Charcoal Filters, not to mention the Performing Imports tune which when first announced to the public was priced at $5,000 dollars by itself.

Like what happened when the M5 was first released to the public of the United States last August all of the dealers that had them on their inventory showroom floor wanted top dollar for them and some even got away with charging a mark-up over U.S. MSRP. Nowadays the U.S. market is completely flooded with over 1,100 2013 M5's, M6's, and M6's convertables and customers are easily picking them up at or below U.S. Invoice.

The same applies with aftermarket tuners and their products. They charge a lot in the beginning because they can get away with it. Supply and demand. I see the demand for aftermarket parts starting to wane a bit already as more products are being released for the F10 M5 and F12/F13 M6 and in greater quantity. Just recently we saw Turner Motorsport announce a new muffler deleted exhaust system and Remus now has an exhaust system coming out, that makes about 10 different aftermarket exhaust systems now available for the M5 and M6. This is also called flooding the market.

I will say this though, Switzer seems to be the first to offer a subtantially good tune featuring a piggyback design allowing customers to easily return to stock. I personally like the sound of that. Exactly how much the tune produces by itself, we still don't know. I hope that Switzer releases some numbers to us soon though. More and more products will be released though and we should see prices start to drop or become more negotiable due to the principles of a free market. So as it stands I think the Switzer package with everthing that it comes with seems pretty competitive right now and not a bad price but not a great one either.

It says $7k for the kit which is all the parts I assume. I would also assume the exhaust is $3,500 to $4k of that. The tune or piggy back is probably $2,500 to $3k alone. I doubt they'd charge 7k for just the tune. They would price themselves out of the market in a heartbeat.

As a side not if anyone is looking for 40hp via piggy back, Terry Burger from Burger Motorsport told me that his Juice Box works on the F10 M5. Claimed it didn't set off any lights or any clues for dealers to penalize us. Just another option which is under $500!

I agree with you Rpim5, but guess we can look at it like this as we all get azz raped when we buy anthing. Case in point. Ar-15's. Before all this mess came about I bought my HK556 for 3k. I have had at least 5 guys a the gun range offer me 7k for it. Of course I will never get rid of it because nobody can get that one at this time. Glad I had mine for the last 3 years. Even my ruger 556. It cost 1300 and the price of it now is 2900 if your lucky to get one. To me, these companies put too much stock in their products up front just to azz rape us. But if the tune drops in price, I could be a canidate for it as I am a power junkie. From my 81mph gpr 1300, fully race preped 07 honda trx-450 to this car. Hell, I even ported out my weedeater for more power. lol

Switzer are highly regarded in the USA GT-R community, but iirc they only sell everything as a package deal, i.e. you could not buy just the ECU tune itself.

It's the concept of the free market to sell your products at the highest possible price that the consumer is willing to buy... As long as enough BMW owners are willing to pay a premium price for stuff, manufacturers/vendors will charge a premium price.

Simple as that. If no one is willing to pay that premium, prices will come down or products will not be released (as development costs will be to high to justify selling at a low price).

It's basically how people gets wealthy in the free world...

Besides, Switzer is not aiming at huge M5 crowds wanting to buy their kit anyway. Therefore, it the package fits your needs, then consider getting it.

Remember, some of us spent $8-10K just on wheels & tires alone, they are just for looks !

I definitely think its a marketing mistake to only offer a bundle package. I would gladly pay $5000 for a reliable, legitimate 140hp gain tune, if it worked with my existing Meisterschaft exhaust. If they don't unbundle it, most existing performance buffs are going to pass, considering almost all of us have already added exhaust.

The other thing we need to verify is how they're measuring 700hp. I'm far more interested in the gain over stock versus the total horsepower due to the variance of US Dyno systems.

Here's the deal with Switzer.

If you want their complete package which will make 700hp to the crank then this is what you get:

1. Switzer Full Exhaust System
2. Switzer Plug and Play (Piggy-Back) Tune
3. Switzer Drop-in Air Filters

Then it will cost you about $7,000.

If you just want the tune, then they will sell you a different package that includes only these:

1. Switzer Plug and Play (Piggy-Back) Tune
2. Switzer Drop-in Air Filters

They will sell this smaller package for about $3,000.

Some notes about the tune:

1. It is a completely plug and play module, which means that you can remove it any time you want.
2. It does not remove the 155mph speed limiter.
3. It does not remove any CEL's you might get from doing a Catless downpipe setup.

According to their dyno sheet, with their complete package you will make about 604hp to the wheel and about 562tq to the wheel. With just thier tune and their filters for the smaller package they are unable to say what results you will have.

I am undecided if I am going to get it just yet, but feel free to make your decision based off this information or you can call them yourself.

Thanks for the info. Did they say their exhaust package includes castless down pipes or is cat back. Did they do a before after Dyno on the same car showing the actual crank and wheel improvement over stock?
