F020-13-03-502 = ISTA/P 2.49.1

How do you check what I-step version you have? Through ESYS? I looked around in the software, no luck.

Yes, in VCM:

It is one of these two:

F020-12-03-501 = ISTA/P 2.46.0
F020-12-03-503 = ISTA/P 2.46.1

The I-Level does not always change with every version of ISTA/P.

I think it is always best to have the latest ISTA/P on the car if possible. On the F10 chassis, 47.x is where they added the HUD Entertainment Options, so 46.1 would be undesirable for those with HUD Option. On the F30 chassis, the M-Performance Logo was added in 47.4 I think, so 46.1 would be undesirable for those with 6WA Extended Display Panel.

That said, car software updates are not provided by BMW under warranty without reason. The car needs to either have an ISTA/D diganosis indicating a problem with the car that requires new programming, or an active SIB (Service Bulletin) that requires new programming. The SIB route is the best option, as there has been quite a few on the F30 necessitating the car be programmed.

I had my car in today to get the M Performance PPK installed. My integration level is now F020-13-03-503, my car shipped with F020-12-11-503 (mid December build).

E-Sys with 49.3 worked fine for coding.

I think I've stumbled on an easy way to check.

Today, I exported my profile to a USB stick and took a look at the contents.

It's in the \BMWData\MobileProfile subdirectory with a filename of [profilename].mpd.

Take a look at this screenshot. If I am not mistaken the XML tag <i-step> is the vehicle programming level.

If correct, this is an easy way for people to keep track of the programming level in their car.

I take it my level is an old one. It's going in for service on Monday. We'll see what it looks like after I get it back.

Unfortunately, this method is unreliable and the results are often wrong. The only way to know with certainty is to read VCM with E-Sys.

Question

Is there a running list of ISTA/P versions with major changes/fixes associated with each version?

No, although each ISTA/P release is usually accompanied with Release Notes detailing some fixes, and known issues.

A did find a running list, but no release notes, of course. It'd be nice to have those.

P.S. F30s have had radio preset issues and hoping those are fixed by now.

A list, yes, a list with running release notes, no.

That one is old by the way as 52.0 is released.

Hey Shawn, any idea what changed in 52.0? Worth the upgrade from 51.3?

I-Step releases?

I'm curious...

How often does BMW release a new I-Step to the field? Do they go by periodic scheduled releases or just whenever they need to?

On that note, is there a reference where we can see what is the latest and greatest I-Step release?

It's whenever they need to.

Here is the I-Level Table from 2.53.0:

P2.53.0_ISTA-P VERSION AND I-LEVEL OVERVIEW.pdf

Since then, F20 is:

ISTA/P 2.53.2 F020-14-07-503
ISTA/P 2.53.3 F020-14-07-503
ISTA/P 2.53.4 F020-14-07-503

Where can we get a view of the SIB, my dealers are notoriously lazy and unless I ask, force or show them a SIB they don't do the update....
