diy: REAR BUMPER REMOVAL

THIS THREAD WILL HELP YOU REPLACE ANYTHING UNDER THE REAR BUMPER AND THE BUMPER ITSELF.. ITS NOT THAT BAD, SOO Lets TAKE A DEEP BREATH.. and HERE WE GO..

TOOLS: VERY SIMPLE
5/16 SOCKET AND FAT FLAT TIP SCREWDRIVER

WITH THE SCREWDRIVER, PRAY OF 4 FIXING PLUGS ALONG THIS PLASTIC TRUNK REAR PANEL.

THEN ANOTHER 2 MORE ON EACH SIDE FIXING PLUGS ON THE TRUNK LINERS. BOTH NEAR THE REAR SEAT LATCH.

LIFT THIS DRIP GUARD ON BOTH SIDE OF THE TAIL LIGHT BUT LIFTING THE TOP TABS FIRST AND FULL OUT GENTLY.

REMOVE THE LINER AND FOLD IT OUT AT THE CENTER OF THE TRUNK ON BOTH SIDE. HERE IS A PICS BEHIND THE TAIL LIGHTS. THE TAIL LIGHT IS SECURED BY 3 NUTS. USE YOUR 5/16 SOCKET TO REMOVE THE NUTS. THEIRS A HIDDEN NUT BEHIND THE SPRINGS. UNPLUG THE POWER SOURCE AND REMOVE THE TAIL LIGHTS ON BOTH SIDES.

REMOVE THIS SCREW ON BOTH SIDE WITH 5/16 TO FREE IT FROM THE FRAME.

TOP PART IS DONE LETS MOVE UNDERNEATH THE CAR:

REMOVE SCREW FROM THE GUIDE BOTTOM CENTER AND FIXING PINS.

3 MORE SCREWS BEHIND THE FENDERS..TOP ONES ARE KINDA TOUGH..

SO WITH BOTH REAR LIGHT OFF AND 1 SCREW NEAR BOTH OF THE TAIL LIGHTS, NOW WERE READY TO PRY OFF THE BUMPER FROM THE FENDER.

LIFT THE Bumper UP FROM THE CORNER AND PULL AWAY WITH GENTLE FORCE. PRY IT ON BOTH SIDE OF THE Bumper AND STOP THERE.

NOW WITH BOTH Bumper OFF AND HANGING, GENTLY PUSH ON THE 3 TABS AND PULL UP AT THE SAME TIME ON THE BUMPER.

THIS IS A PERFECT TIME TO PLACE A RUG UNDERNEATH THE BUMPER AND CALL FOR HELP BECAUSE YOU TO DO THE SAME PROCEDURE ON THE OTHER CORNER AND SOME1 NEEDS TO SUPPORT THE OTHER SIDE. AND YOUR READY TO PULL THE BUMPER OUT AT THIS TIME.. THE BUMPER HAS MULTIPLE WIRING FOR THE SENSORS..UNPLUG THOSE AND THE BUMPER IS FREEEE!!!
REVERSE PROCEDURES WHEN PLACING THE BUMPER BACK.

PLS FEEL FREE TO ADD IF I MISSED ANYTHING..I PAYED A SHOP $200 TO REMOVE MY BUMPER WITH BAD RESULTS..NOW WE CAN DO IT WITHOUT PAYING..

Yes, thanks for the write up. I plan to do this myself to get some painting work done on the bumper. Just a quick question:

When you said "LIFT THE FENDER UP FROM THE CORNER AND PULL AWAY WITH GENTLE FORCE. PRY IT ON BOTH SIDE OF THE FENDER AND STOP THERE." Are you pulling the bumper down or out?

I did but was not satisfy with the outcome.. the lip on the diffuser near the tow port is a bit tight and you really have to work it in to bite into 3 protruding hangers on the bumper..they should have put more effort into it.

This also works as a tail-light removal/replacement DIY! ... Half of it anyway! Well done!

This is a great write-up. I took off my rear bumper a few months ago based on a E60 write-up and yours would have definitely helped when it came to pulling the bumper over the three corner tabs. I was trying to get the bumper over those before pulling on off the bumper from the side.

Thank you for the write up. I've got a question about what you saw when you had the bumper cover off.
Background: I had the OEM standard bumper cover removed and replaced with an OEM M Sport bumper which I bought from an auto salvage yard in Houston. When I got it, it clearly had been in the sun and dirt for a long time. A local San Diego collision repair center prepped, primed and painted the bumper cover. I gave them the M Sport pieces that had to be changed behind the bumper cover. As you can see in my attached photo, the fitment of this OEM M Sport bumper cover is really horrible where it meets the center of the trunk lid. My guess is that either the salvaged bumper cover was deformed by being improperly stored in Houston's heat, or that during the installation, the body guy missed some alignment tabs which are supposed to hold the bumper cover's upper surface in the correct alignment.

So, the question for you, when you had your bumper cover off, did you notice any slots or tabs into which the bumper cover's upper flat surface is supposed to be placed?

I was going to take the car to a high-end shop and ask them for a second opinion, but with your DIY you have given me a way to fix this problem for myself, and saved me time and money!

Thank you!

Thanks for the offer to look into the fitment question. Before you set anyone to task, I wanted to clarify where I have the problem...I re-loaded my picture with a red circle showing where the bumper cover bows upward and touches the trunk lid. This is the area that I think must have some sort of alignment tab which the installer missed. Thanks for the offer of help.

Regards,
MWPos

If you just want to replace the diffuser does the entire bumper need to come off, or is there a way just to get the diffuser off?

the diffuser comes off real easy. There are about 4 or 5 tabs at the bottom and they come off real easy. Then you just pretty much pop off the diffuser with a lil bit of force.

Damaged rear bumper replaced by new OEM rear bumper, the seller will give me a full refund for the damaged goods that he sold to me. And, yes, the valance (diffuser?) is painted a slightly gloss black.
