Hmm, when I used to do this sort of thing I think the car was supposed to be cold right, on a level surface and the dipstick would measure all the oil sunk down to the sump.
Is it perhaps that you had just used the car and some oil was still circulating ? SJ |

TFM states the car must have been run for at least 6 miles, warm and have sat on level ground for 5 mins.. i checked with this procedure!!
on every single car ive ever owned before ive checked first thing in the morning before being run and having sat all night... when i checked per TFM 2 days ago it was on the max.... this is why i think my dipo is dodgy cuz tomorrow it will prob read max again oooo i dont know

well to eliminate all variables, why not just do it first thing in the morning before it's run, at least that way you can compare something even.
I wouldn't worry TOO much about the marks reading correctly cos they won't, but at least you can tell if the physical level is the same. SJ |

I agree with SJ, I thing you should take the reading in the morning when the car is cold, and do it every day for a week. Keep record of the level. This way you should compare like for like. Steph |

Carl, I really don't think there is any more we can say on this - your dipstick is beyond help! I think the best thing would be to take the car back to the dealer and ask them for an explanation, since now you do seem to be genuinely following the procedure in the manual. Just as conclusive proof (for the dealer also perhaps) you could see if you can get a photograph of it showing on the max mark.
Gordon.

I was surprised it wasn't a silver dipstick to be honest. I would have thought the Carlos-mobile would have been built with a silver dipstick in its engine

Follow the procedure in the manual for checking oil. BMW wrote the book, so they should know how the car behaves. Try and check the oil the same way over a period of a few days. The first thing is to try and show that the readings are consistent (always the same ) After a few days of doing this (keep us updated) tell the dealer what the situation is. If the oil is consistent then good (although if its half way between min and max it obviously needs topped up, which the dealer should do foc). If you do get another max reading... that would be strange, and we might need advice from Dave/NFS The point is, follow the book, keep the procedure for checking the same and take evidence. For peace of mind I would still ask the dealer to check it though.

Hah! Hands full of what? Told you that's how you damaged your bumper! The camera work looks a bit shaky
Do as all have said mate and check in exactly the same circumstances each time, and if not HP then go to the dealer. |

You MUST be doing something wrong/inconsistent. It's a stick that dips into the oil - there's nothing to go wrong. Your oil level must be changing because you're doing it at different times, before and after a run etc. Are you sure you're pushing the dipstick all the way home when you do the measurement?
Listen, if it'd consumed THAT much oil in two days, you'd know about it - it'd be rattling like a cnut and spewing smoke everwhere. Dunno why people check oil levels now-a-days, that what the oil warning light is for, isn't it

Weellll, sensors and warning lights don't fail like they used to.
People stress about their oil level being on "low" - it's a tolerance range FFS, low is still okay. You're more likely to cause damage (FOD) keep taking the oil cap off and the dipstick out.

the obsessiveness comes from having a performance engine and keeping it that way!!!

Are you sure that you are not slowly draining the engine by checking it so often and cleaning the excess oil from the dipstick?
