Service Engine Soon Light and Oil Change

Well I took my e90-30xi in for it's 2nd free oil change and a "Service Engine Soon" light today.

Apparently there was a SB dated 12-19-06 for a software update. They updated my software and lost audio, and a bunch of other functions which they resolved. However then the DSC, 4x4 and brake lights malfunctioned which was resulted from a "steering angle sensor" fault and they were able to clear it finally. LOL good old Microsoft, update the software and ruin the rest of the computer (in this case car).

I was wondering why I didn't hear from my SA and it was past 4 PM already. I had dropped off the car before 8 am too.

My software version is now E89-06-09-530, if that means anything to anyone. The software updated apparently changed the font of the OBC display too. The fonts are now larger, but the old fonts looked better.

Total items completed:
1. Oil change
2. Brake fluid flush
3. Courtesy Inspection
4. New wiper inserts
5. The software update
6. New front license bracket as one of the screw hole was stripped and I was running only 1-screw. (Yes I know I'm loser running my front plates). Actually my SA wanted to charge me like $80 for this. I told her no way. It should be warranty and it's CA required; otherwise, I'd skip the front plate, so she finally said ok.
7. Fix pass side rear rim

Total out of pocket $150 for the rim repair.

Update - well the light came on again today

I started the car after lunch and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on again...

I called the dealer and they actually tried to get me in this Monday, but I can't make it until the following week. At least they didn't make any kind of fuss when I told them that I needed a loaner.

The receptionist said "oh yes definitely we'll get you a loaner" and she was actually very helpful and even gave me a Conf #. First time that I've had a Conf. # for a Service Appt.

We'll see what happens this time.

My 2006 325i seems to be having a similar problem, with the 'SES' light coming on, then going away. Probably not in a related problem, the 'miles to service' indication went from 6000 to 4800 on a 120 mile round trip. Checked the oil and the indicator shows halfway between min and max so I added .6 qts, which didn't seem to affect the oil level. My car has just been in for 30k mile service two weeks ago, but it's going back tuesday to have this checked out.

Mines stays on all the time though.

Actually I'm curious if the SES light is tied to your next scheduled service. Because earlier this month when it came on, the next scheduled date was for 10/2007. Then when it came on again last week, the next scheduled service is for 11/2007.

I checked the oil level again, it's at max now, so the topping off has helped. the miles to service is not decreasing as fast now, so that appears to be tied to the lack of oil. She's going in for service today anyway even though the symptoms have pretty much gone away. We'll see if they find any fault codes or other signs.

Update

Well they replaced the DTML pump again today. It's my 2nd one in less a year. I feel like the 35 folks with bad fuel pumps. :sad0147:

BTW. I got a e90-28 SG/Black loaner/SP/leatherette. Dayum everytime I drive a loaner without CA, it makes me wonder WTF is up with the 2-steps (insert fob and then push the button, what a f*c*in hassle). I rather just have a regular key then. For some reason the car felt heavier than my 30XI.

In addition everytime I drive the 328, I think hmmm am I going to happy with a 28 Cab considering the additional weight. I still wish that they made the twin-turbo an option on the 35s.

What feedback do you use to gauge 'heaviness'? The 328i doesn't pull as in the low end as your 330 so that might be it. If and when companies like Audi and MB make hp improvements to their 'base' model you might see the three stage intake manifold back on the BMW 'base' model.

The SA informed me that the cause of the 'service engine soon' light could be due to a sticky VANOS solenoid exhaust. It has to go back in for an all day fix, including a software update.

Exactly I think that has to do with it. Of course I also realize that it's about 40 HPs different too. Although I have an AWD, so that adds more weight on my end too.

I'm just concerned that if I decide to save the $3.5K and go with a 28 Cab that I'm going to be disappointed due to the lower end torque plus with the extra weight of the hardtop.

I'm not dissing the 28 though. It's still a nice car.

DTML Pump

Replacing the DTML pump is a 45 minute job done anyone can do. It's located behind the passenger rear wheel under the plastic shielding. See photo.
