OEM Muffler Modded: UPDATED with Revs

You guys may recall I posted a gutted oem muffler a couple of monts back. Well I finally got a chance to finish it up.

Initial thoughts at startup was oh man its super quiet at idle did I waste my money...BUT driving this thing its a whole different story. Ill let the pictures and videos do the talking.

Here is the original thread.
http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=819125

Zero drone, louder more aggressive. This is how the M Performance should sound. Not intrusive at all. Now you can hear the car, even with the radio on, you know you have an exhaust back there. I love it. So worth the $79 welding labor and a $20 stainless clamp I needed. $100 mod super happy here

I also spray painted the muffler flat black with 1200* VHT to hide the welds and the overall muffler.

UPDATED:
I pasted up a link to my M Performance exhaust revs below the modded muffler so you guys can get a good comparison.

Sounds great. So did you end up opening the muffler all the way around to weld all of the holes in chambers 1 and 3? And you put all the deadening stuffing into chamber 2?

Also, I'm curious how you got the muffler back on since the pipes were the same diameter. What kind of clamp did you use?

Yes had to open it all the way in order for the welder to fit in there. And yes the stuffing is in chamber 2 now, this was highly recommended by the exhaust shop. He said it will kill all drone. And it did. I love it. It's so tame on the highway I couldn't believe it. But when you open it up it sounds so good.

My guess is it would be even louder if you left the stuffing out. But I didn't want drone or something annoying.

I reused the M Performance clamp, it lined up just like the M performance muffler would. Fit is great.

I actually posted a video clip of the revving engine with my exhaust on the old thread, go check it out aswell!

I did 1 chamber first and tested, then did both and soldered all the holes in like the OP did, i approve of this mod! It's the cheapest and the most awesome sounding exhaust mod i've seen.. Bye bye bmw performance exhaust!

I ment to write you, I couldn't hear your sound clip for some reason. How does it compare to mine? Louder? Quiter? I could have left the packing completely out but I think drone would have killed me in the long run.
Definitely sounds way better then my M performance.

So how much packing did you leave in, and did you put it back in the original 1&3 chambers? I put mine in chamber 2 as advised by the exhausr shop. It worked flawless. Glad it worked for both of us .

What are the differences between this and the M Performance? You didn't tear open the M performance, did you?

Sound wise, sounds mean....but not very german. Sounds like a raw american V8. I kinda like it, just seems out of place...

Internally honestly I don't know. I didn't tear into the m performance. I don't really feel the need to. The modded basically became a straight through design.

It does sound mean and more aggressive, yes you're right it doesn't have that bit of hollow rasp like the m performance does bit it's not as raw as it seems. It's quite tame when you want it to be.

I can say the burble is stupid loud and last longer. And the cackle is almost never ending on downshifts. The videos are nice but it just has to be heard in person to really judge it. Overall for a $100 I say the project was a success.

To DD and Shivas;

I dont have access to my car at the moment but the sound is the same! I dont think stuffing the wig stuff in chamber 2 changes the sound too much.

I have no isolation stuffing and everything soldered in, the drone is veeery low, much like just a purr reminding you your engine is still running but nothing that would annoy anyone.

The sound is awesome, much more refined than a v8 (using a mustang as comparison) more race car like, less harley davidson like

Overall best decision I've made after JB4!

Ha, yeah not sure what to call it. Someone in the original thread called it Frankenstein muffler. I cant really claim the idea I saw it done on an M3 and it worked, I figured itll work on our cars too.

Im all about saving you guys money . M Performance muffler is just ridiculous for $1200! I cant believe I even paid $900 for it. If it was a full exhaust yeah but its just an axle back. Really I think it should be like a $500 option. I mean it sounds great dont get me wrong..I just like my creation better

Is your car manual or you were using the pedal shift with automatic transmission?

It's auto. I was driving using both, sport and sport shift, and manual shifting. I'm in the process of getting a go pro and ill do some better drives once I have the capability of mounting the camera to the rear bumper.

Awesome mod. I've been looking for a reason to buy a welder Can someone post a pic of the clamp used? I would think that one side of the pipe would need to be expanded first.
