iPod Control from Wheel
Hi all. Found something I'm not sure about. I use an iPod connect to the USB/audio ports in the center armrest of my 13 335xi. The scroll wheel on the steering wheel shows the current song, but I can't scroll through or advance to the next song in the list. I have to use the arrow buttons on the center dash. I can scroll through satellite radio stations and select a different one from the wheel. Is this a problem in my car that can be fixed or does yours behave the same way? Thanks!

Are you going through a playlist or shuffling multiple songs or just playing a single song? I have also experienced this, but I just navigate out and re-select a song in a playlist from the iDrive controller, and then I'm able to use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel?

I use a playlist on the ipod of a few hundred songs, then choose random from the controller so they aren't in sequence. I swear the first day I drove it I was able to scroll through the songs (shuffled in the playlist), but now it's not working.

I've had this happen from time to time, and I've found that turning off the iPhone and turning it back on will resolve the issue. You'll want to make sure that you're playing the song from a playlists, and not just directly from the artist/song. Think of it this way, if you are able to click "next" on the iPod and get another song, you should be able to scroll using the scroll wheel.

It's an ipod nano. When I remove the nano from the cable connector, I can advance shuffled songs normally on the ipod. When I reconnect it, the steering controls don't allow me to advance songs, I have to use the arrow buttons on the dash. I've disconnected and reconnected the cable and the ipod several times. I just downloaded the latest software update for the car and will install that next.

No luck. Updated the software, disconnected and reconnected the ipod, same results - can't advance through the steering controls. Anyone else have this persistent experience?

Concerthiker,
Reset the iPod. Hold down the power button until you see the apple logo. This is essentially a reboot of the iPod. Maybe try that?

This one doesn't have a power button. It's the nano, best it does is "sleep". It does that on its own after a few minutes without use, so basically everytime I park.

There's a two button combination that will reset it. The one I have in the 135 is an old square Nano, let me check what it is....
Hold down Menu and centre button for a few seconds, it will then reset. Not confirming it will fix, but that's how you reset.

Ok so I figured it out - I just opened the playlist again through the car. Then I was able to scroll through the songs using the wheel control. A final note of disappointment - it's still not a "next" through the wheel. The arrow button advances to the next song in the random/shuffle sequence. The wheel only scrolls the songs alphabetically in the playlist. Not quite as convenient (I like the surprise of going to the next random song), but it's better than no wheel control at all!
Does anyone else use the ipod with random/shuffle and use wheel controls to advance songs? Any different results? |

I noticed the same thing. VERY rarely do I ever listen to a full album, my ipod/iphone etc are always on shuffle. Using the wheel just goes to the next song alphabetically in my 15k songs on the ipod...to get it to shuffle I have to push the arrow button. I can't stand it and it feels like a far reach just to change a track...quite annoying. I wonder if it will ever get fixed or if it's something that could be changed in a setting for scroll wheel function or something...

I think its because the ipod handles the picking the random songs, not the car. I had the same problem with a current gen Pioneer head unit in another car when the ipod was set to random.
