M4 naming

Don't understood why BMW would phase out the M3 naming and in favorite of M4 ? For decades BMW M3 was well known brand name why mess up up a good name and replace with an unrecognized M4?

There will be an M3, the sedans will still be 3 series so the only new M3 will have four doors.

To loosely quote one of the guys at BMW NA, they wanted to separate the 3 and the 3 coupe for easier model designation/recognition in the future. The E36 coupe and sedan bodies were basically identical, you could picture it right away. The E46 had front design changes between the coupe and sedan, and nearly identical rear. Also easy to picture when mentioning E46 3 series.

But where it gets messy is when the E9x started, with the coupe design sharing nothing but the front end with the sedan, as with the convertible. You say e9x 3 series, and you get a mixed picture of whatever body style 3 you are most fond of, E90/1/2/3. They want to change that to where when you say 3, you think sedan/wagon. You say 4, you think of coupe. Makes somewhat more sense after I heard that.

That's at least what I got out of what the guys were talking about at the latest CCA meet in NJ.

That's BS.

Once upon a time, BMW model designations actually made sense.

For example: 325Ci - it is a 3-series, as denoted by the first number. Further, it has a 2.5 liter petrol injection motor under the hood, and the body style is coupe.

Of course, BMW marketing came around and started making arbitrary changes (e.g. the last two digits no longer represent the engine displacement/size).

What's also ironic is that the e92 "3 coupe" looks much more different from the sedan counterpart (e90) that the f32 "4 coupe" looks from the f30.

Lets say 328i and 335i. Theres no way to name them by using the engine displacement, both 3.0.

I agree that e90 and e92/e93 has totally different front end also rear. To me F30 and f32 looks so much the same.

We don't know what its going to be called. For all we know, its still going to be M3, just in a 4 door version, and coupe version. The standard 4er can keep the naming, but they might just keep the M3 badge for the coupe.

Generally speaking, M versions follow the nomenclature of the model they're based on. There have been rumors that BMW might consider to name all F8x versions as M3, but this idea was apparently dismissed. Long story short, the coupe version will be called M4 Coupé.

Best regards,

Yeah, I'm aware of the naming, but until someone from BMW comes in and says its going to be called M4, it *might* still be called M3, regardless of the body. No one is right or wrong, until the day it comes out, we don't know squat.

This 'rumour' you mention, might be true. The M3 name has too much history to turn around and say there is going to be a M3, M3.14 and M4 (sedan, touring and coupe).

Some really questionable marketing decisions by BMW on their future direction. Dont really understand what the Germans are on about, but whatever. For everyone past us, the 3 Coupe now ceases to exist.
