Have the car booked in tomorrow for 4 new tyres, was going for non run flats and a compressor/tyre weld set up...posted on the uk tech forum but now getting more concerned that rft may be best...

Lots of comments re insurance, warranty and tyre pressure, all seems hassle.

BMW have emailed saying non run flats must be the same type of tyre as rft


So my question is this, my car is. 320d m sport on 18 inch wheels, will non run flats be a revelation...or should is tick with oem?

I know this has been done to death but its not as simple as I thought.

It's never simple, since it's a trade off. RFT give you piece of mind but a sh!tty ride. Most non RFTs are fairly cheaper, give you a smoother ride, and there are many models to choose from. But if your tire blows or picks up any serious puncture, you'll need a tow truck (unless you have a donut spare which takes precious room in your trunk). Like everything in life, it's a matter of how much risk you're willing to take.

I've just had the RFT on my LCI 320d swapped for none RFT Goodyear Eagle F1 A2 & the difference in ride, noise, handling, everything is a revelation, it feels like a completely different car - I certainly won't be going back to RFTs again

I changed from RFT to non RFT 2 years ago and have never regretted it. RFT can also get shredded, a friend of mine had that happen to his 320d with RFT.

In nearly 30 years of driving I have never had a puncture requiring emergency wheel change.

Your choice mate pros and cons oh and there are always breakdown organisations.

I'm going for it! Just need a tyre weld kit but already have breakdown cover so should be fine.

OMG! Picked the car up and had a good drive round on so,e terrible local roads I have to usually use....it's back it's a normal BMW...wow...why did I not ditch them sooner, it's smooth and super quiet, bumps are just absorbed.

So happy! Thanks for all the advice.

In the went for Pirelli Rossi Xl , we'll see how thy are in three months.

I'll be swapping for non runflats as the current set wear down. I don't mind the ride at the moment but can't turn down a better ride and cheaper tyres! Will just have to get the kit. I carry a pressure gauge now as a the warning came up and I had no idea how serious or even what tyre it was without one. Ended up being the garage pumped them up too high and either forgot one or it dropped to a bit below correct and I ended up postponing a trip an hour trying to figure it out!

What's the score with your insurance, have you had to declare that you've changed, or did they not care? Not sure why they would, not as if they cover getting a flat

The concern with insurance is if they see it as an undeclared modification.

Thus invalidating your insurance.

My insurance company declared that none RFT tyres are a modification & wanted to put my premium up, but when I argued that they aren't they eventually agreed & said that I didn't even need to declare them, but I've got the recorded conversation just in case

The n47 engine was desgined with faults, people make mistakes, Even BMW. Runflat=Mistake

BMW never put rfts on the M3. Ever wondered why?
Though through much hassle people got alloys changed FOC by BMW that where on rfts!!!
XL tyres compensate for changing to non rfts
So to me design doesn't really make a good argument for BMW to use

I replaced my RFT today, and I could not be happier. I concur with the earlier reply, it is like driving a different car.

Why would there be any insurance complications? you can order a brand new bmw with non run flats if you want. I am on my 4th BMW, 2 bought from main dealers and ive requested that the dealer remove the awful runflats before i took the car which they did without issue.
Non run flats are so much better.

With n-RFT my 330D was ever so tail happy in the wet. With normal tyres its a different car and grips in the cold & wet like it never did before.

interesting topic as mine is on RFT currently, yet I know at some point i will of course need to replace them, my only thing is I do some long runs in the middle of the night so if i went to regular tyres would it be a fair move to get a space saver and the bits and bobs? as read a few bits about what people carry in the event of a flat!
